RR 492: Youtube - Benefit or Burden Part 2

Welcome to the second installment of Youtube: Benefit or Burden Part 2. As you go through this episode you’ll discover the stimulus for this discussion. There are many passionate people on both sides of the value of YouTube as it relates to auto repair.

The episode’s expert guests include: Paul Danner, ‘Scanner Danner’ fame, Brin Kline, shop owner and member of Trained By Techs, Shop owner and Technician Michael Broccolo, from Rochester, NY Sara Fraser from Hass Performance Consulting and Matt Fanslow shop manager and lead diagnostician Riverside Automotive.

You’ll hear some sparks fly as the passion for training and quality diagnosis was front and center. The debate over the words diagnostic vs testing was prominent and the real facts that many shops are not really diagnosing they are retrieving a fault code and using statistical diagnostics therefore shooting the parts cannon and in many cases not doing right by the customer.

Paul Danner, aka ScannerDanner on YouTube clears up the misconception that his name is not “Dan,” which he gets all the time. People think his name is Dan and he added “ner” to rhyme with “Scanner”? He says it is not true and that that it would be really stupid!!!!

His career in the automotive field started as a junior in high school in 1990. He took two years of auto mechanics in high school, then another two-year program (post-secondary) at Rosedale Technical College in Pittsburgh (where he now teaches). After Rosedale, Paul entered the field and worked full time for about 8 years before coming back to teach at the school. This September 2018, Paul will be starting his 18th year as an automotive instructor. Listen to Paul’s previous episodes HERE.

Brin Kline is the owner of Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, FL. His career in automotive repair spans 17 years with nearly 8 years as an owner.

Brin knows that the automotive repair industry is ever-changing. Diagnosing and repairing automobiles of today have many more requirements for up to date training than they did in years past. Today, a technician must network with and befriend other likeminded individuals, commit a lot of their personal time to craft their skills so they can confidently, efficiently and accurately diagnose the issues that they face on a daily basis. Look for Brin’s other episodes HERE.

Matt Fanslow is the diagnostic tech/shop manager at Riverside Automotive in Red Wing, MN. His primary responsibilities are to diagnose driveability and electrical/electronic issues, and perform most all programming, coding, initializing, adoptions, etc. Basically, if it needs to be figured out or has wires, it goes to Matt. He’s been a tech since 1996.

Matt is also a subject matter expert for ASE and has instructed at Vision Hi-Tech Training and Expo.

Matt has participated on 18 ASE technical committees for the ASE Practice Test, A6, A7, A8, and L1 tests. He’s also done case studies for Standard Motor Products.

Fanslow’s goal is to do everything in his power to improve the overall level of professionalism within the automotive and light truck repair trade and also raise the level of its public image. Hear Matt in previous episodes HERE.

Michael Broccolo is from Rochester, NY. His father has been in the automotive/collision/towing/salvage business since before he was born. Michael grew up around cars and attended BOCES (High School Cooperative Skills) for collision repair. In 2006 SkillsUSA Michael placed 1st in New York State in collision repair and attended the national competition. Apprenticed at a high volume collision shop right out of high school. Michael currently owns Broccolo Automotive & Collison with his father. Broccolo’s is a full service automotive/collision shop, a salvage yard/used & new auto parts, and offer towing services all under one roof. Michael’s previous episodes HERE.

Sara Fraser is a millennial who has a love for life, travel, and connecting with other humans! She has over 15 years of retail management experience, the last 6 of them as an office manager for a used car sales and service center. To bring her customer service, marketing, and business knowledge to the automotive industry she has recently joined the team at Haas Performance Consulting.

Sara loves helping others grow and succeed and is excited to share her expertise on management and social media, her views on how and why the younger generations think and act, and how to work and manage a business within a multi-generational workforce. When she isn’t working Sara spends her time traveling, attending theatrical productions, music festivals, concerts, advocating for human and animal rights, celebrating life in general and connecting with other people from all over the world. Look for Sara’s previous episodes HERE.

Key Talking Points:

Gen Z may wants a lot of information

Millennials and Gen Z want to see your reviews and what is on social media about you and your company

While attempting to put your company in a good light, you can put other companies in a bad light. For Brin it happened and he didn’t mean to do that.

Re-educate the customer what they are paying for vs what they found on an internet search

Diagnostics doesn’t mean much to a customer

The word most preferred is ‘Testing’

You are selling a series of tests to pinpoint the problem.

The doctor must see you before writing a prescription

Paul: Stop calling diagnostics a ‘Time’. It is a diagnostic service or an analysis for a certain fee for so much time

It is a flat fee to pay me to look at your vehicle

Make no apologies for your fee

Howeiver 90% of the industry connects a scan tool and replaces a part

Customer are getting mad because of this. Looks simple and degrades the shops doing a full diag and charging for it

If customers comes to you because parts swapping did not fix their problem, yu’ve got to charge correctly for applying your experience, training and equipment investment

85-90% of vehicles can be handled in the first hour if you are experienced and trained

Many shops are not diagnosing. They are retrieving a fault code and using statistical diagnostics to find a repair option

For a flat fee customers are paying for testing in Matt’s shop

They are not paying for a result but are paying for testing that generates a result

What happens if you are hired to fix the repair the customer believes is the problem and it doesn’t fix the problem? Should it bring confidence to the customer when the technician does the proper testing finds the real problem.

Brin offers a free assessment no charge and then gives a price to repair

He offers a few minutes for the assessment

Create your own YouTube or Facebook Video explaining your process of testing and why it is so important to finding the root cause of the problem

Create customer rules for your ecosystem

Why you do what you do from diag time, loaner cars, waiting room, fresh coffee, training, expectations of your experience

Pull back the curtain and teach your customers what they can expect. Soften them up for the culture they will come to expect and appreciate

Take an offensive approach that some Youtube videos are preemptive to what you do

You do not need expensive equipment to create video, just a good smartphone to create good videos. Keep them organic and get them posted. Don’t worry about length, become an expert. Show real tangible results of your testing procedures

We have a serious lack of technicians that can really fix a car. Going to YouTube to find real answers to problems has created a YouTube cult at top diagnosticians such as Paul Danner

Our compensation systems and shop cultures are not rewarding diagnosticians and analytic thinking

Current corporate culture is you are a Rock Star if you can produce, you are not a Rock Star if you are a great Diagnostician

Being a top diagnostician requires a lot of time and training

New generation looking for instant gratification vs the long term gains from training and the ‘learn from your mistakes’ wisdom

Turn your Instagram stories into highlights

Facebook or YouTube does not want you to move your people out of their platform

Put up your video on each platform separately you may get better traction

LinkTree can be used to provide a list of links for Instgram

RR 463: YouTube - Benefit or Burden

As you go through this episode you’ll discover the stimulus for this discussion. There are many passionate people on both sides on the value of YouTube as it relates to auto repair.

My panel is Paul Danner, ‘Scanner Danner’ fame, Brin Kline, shop owner and member of Trained By Techs, Shop owner and Technician Michael Broccolo, owner with his dad in Broccolo Automotive & Collision and 2006 SkillsUSA 1st place winner for NYS (in collision repair) and attended the national competition. Listen when Michael heaps a load of compliments on Scanner Danner and also Shop Manager and Diagnostician at Riverside Riverside Automotive, Redwing, MN, Matt Fanslow.

I believe the panel surmised a single theme. Don’t trash the professional. I know you’ve used YouTube to help you understand a home project. I have, and never has the presenter ever based a professional plumber, carpenter, electrician, etc. you get the drift that they were ripping me off. No doubt there is a lot of great information available on the internet, especially YouTube. It will not go away, however, this team did a very objective job of bringing a professional discussion on the Benefit or Burden of YouTube.

Key Talking Points

Matt had a customer that shared a blower motor repair video that showed a shortcut on a blower motor replace that trashed shops who would not use this shortcuts and charge too many hours for the standard repair

Matt explains what he did with his customer

He is torn with the massive benefits of YouTube and the repercussion of some content that is posted

There are two parts of this debate. The good learning and the bad trashing

Paul Danner started putting case studies on video to support his college class.

He believes YouTube has made his classroom global.

He is cautious about what he says and how he says it

Michael learned a lot from Paul Danner’s video’s

Should YouTube videos tell the public what to look for in a good shop, should skill level be discussed? What should the consumer look for in a good shop.

Stop starting your video saying ‘Your mechanics don’t want you to hear this’. This doesn’t help anyone. It pulls everyone down.

It is easy to tear things down to lift yourself up rather than build others up and show that you are equal or better. Consider professional courtesy

As mentioned: listen to Matt Fanslow For The Record Episode 50. He discussed the power of professional wrestling to help each other’s persona and value to their industry. https://remarkableresults.biz/f050/

Parts changers can learn from YouTube instead of throwing money at the vehicle.

Give props to the people who help you learn.

Paul credits Dan Svitco and John Thorton that set him on his course and helped him learn

Michael says that YouTube has helped him more than classroom so far in his life

Go at your own pace over and over if necessary

Likes hands-on classroom

YouTube and Leader-led and hands-on are all supplements to each other

Paul feels his training helps techs get ready for classes. It is a strong foundation for the working technician

Brin: More training companies are hiring, more venues

YouTubers drop training conference names but should invest in more time to promote the dates and location of these events

Paul has a feeling on the premise that YouTubers are taking money out of professionals pocket by teaching DIYers

Stop bashing the industry. Other skilled trades do not talk down about their professionals who earn their living in their chosen trade.

Diagnostic video’s do not take money away from a technician

Repair videos may take money away from a technician or professional shop

We do have incompetence in our industry. People that do not get their vehicle repaired the first time will go to youtube to try to figure out how to fix their car

Shops need more training and our technicians need to get proper training

Paul’s global classroom feedback lets him know that they are making more money they have ever before because of the training he offers

YouTube does have some great things to offer

Michael is a professional and has used YouTube for some of his training. Paul Danner was a key trainer for him.

YouTube also brings the power of networking to the professional technician

The conversation does not end here

Not enough technicians are going to training. Shop owners and technicians need to invest in training

Privacy, Data Ownership and Cybersecurity - Threats to the Automotive Aftermarket

Carm Capriotto with Bob Redding ASA’s Legislative representative, Frank Leutz who is the COO of Desert car care in Chandler, Arizona, and Brin Kleine who is the owner of Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, Florida. Today we discussed Privacy, Vehicle Data and Cybersecurity.

ASA has one powerful representative in Washington in Bob Redding and anytime you can get to listen and get guidance from Bob you need to invest your time. Privacy, Vehicle Data and Cybersecurity are huge topics and we covered them a lot recently and for you, knowing as much as you can will help get laws passed that will not only benefit your clients but the aftermarket.

You may be skeptical, hesitant and maybe you just don’t the magnitude of this issue.

Shop owners must understand that it is time that someone has to pay attention, educate and protect your clients as it relates to ownership and access to their data. Privacy, Data Ownership and Cyber-security.

Policy makers don’t understand how data affects repairs

We must ensure that our policymakers don’t overreact or reach too far.

We need to be careful because once the bill gets signed it will take the next five years for them to revisit it. We will be stuck with that policy

Data Access, Think Telematics?

Brin Kline is owner of Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, FL. His career in automotive repair spans 17 years with nearly 8 years as an owner.

Brin knows that the automotive repair industry is ever changing.

Brin’s journey to becoming an advocate for improving the automotive repair industry at the national level began when he started to attend conferences and training. At these events, he rubbed shoulders with amazing people who, recognize the need for a national automotive repair industry step-by-step protocol for entry-level recruitment and training, continuing education events, and conferences, sharing of case studies, and helping businesses grow.

One of Brin’s favorite professional moments was being able to attend the 2016 Spring NASTF meeting at the Sheraton in Overland Park, KS. The topic was attracting and retaining technicians.

Brin feels that being a shop owner of a company with great potential is not what gives him a voice. He believes that being an enlightened industry professional is what gives him a voice.

Enlightenment through training, networking with like-minded professionals, collaborating, sharing ideas, knowledge and our experiences with each other, removing pride and egos, getting involved, receiving help and helping each other is the way to a better future and a better industry.

Brin enjoys building case studies for most of the issues that he diagnoses. He has plans of sharing them with training companies, trade magazines and at some point, possibly presenting them himself. In fact, some friends and Brin are working on a project that allows sharing of their diagnostic knowledge and experiences with others. This friendship is a perfect example of the power of attending conferences and networking. Listen to Brin’s previous episodes HERE.

Brin Kline is the owner of Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, FL. His career in automotive repair spans 17 years with nearly 8 years as an owner.

Brin knows that the automotive repair industry is ever changing.

Find previous episodes featuring Brin HERE.

Tanner Brandt began working on cars at age 15 at Wayne Technical and Careers Center. He took two years of automotive technology at their campus. During that time Tanner worked nights and weekends at a repair shop as well as at a race shop.

From there he went to Monroe Community College. This is where his interest was sparked for the diagnostic side of the trade. From there the rest has been history. He attends training conferences throughout the US to learn from others and network. He has a deep interest in making our field more professional and bettering the industry for everyone.

Going to large training conferences allows Tanner to network with other like-minded individuals and find out what changes others want to see in the industry as well. Recently he has been involved with the rest of the Trained By Techs group to help bring time sensible training videos to the masses. He wants to be able to continue to help repair shops and technicians on diagnoses of vehicles as well as learn how to do so. Find previous episodes featuring Tanner HERE.

Pedro De La Torre has over a decade of experience in the automotive technical field. After his graduation from UTI, he was employed by independent repair facilities and specialized in electronics, emissions, and driveability issues. In 2014, Pedro began working with the Indiana emissions program “Clean Air Car Check.” While working in the Quality Assurance department, Pedro was the in-house diagnostic technician and repair advisor. He was also responsible for training hotline operators and he organized Clean Air ICERT training.

ICERT training is the 60-hour program required to become an Indiana Certified Technician. In 2017, Pedro remains a consultant for Indiana’s Clean Air Car Check and began collaborating with “The Driveability Guys” to provide bilingual training to technicians. Pedro is currently an ASE certified Master Automotive Technician and is L1 certified. He recently opened his own business Logic Automotive a Mobile diagnostics, training and consulting company.

Difference between ‘A’ tech and Diagnostic tech- Cannot assume diagnostic tech will have same roles. Specialty field. Does shop have enough volume for diagnostic tech?

Ongoing training and education to be top diagnostic tech- Researching prior to appointments.

Quality control- key sense of detail, can aid shop with following up with repairs, test drive for a customer.

Apprentice and mentor to younger techs

Constantly update equipment and Information technology needs for shop

Write-ups- Warranties, communication clear technical terms for customers while working with a service writer

Scheduling and selling diagnostics- Figure each car 2 hours give or take. If charging hourly by 1.5 hours can communicate to service writer an update who can let the customer know.

Needs to fit in with an already diverse shop of “A Techs,” “B Techs,” and heavy line techs. Everyone needs to complement each other.

Collecting case studies and scan data for future teaching is an important role and tactics for diagnosticians.

Chris Martino has spent 20 years behind a wrench. He currently works at Skumi Garage in Huntington NY, Chris spent the last 4 years retraining in electrical diagnosis with a heavy emphasis on lab scope usage and theory. Chris bought hi first business when he was 22. and ran it until 2008, when the crash happened. His current focus is on European vehicles.

Chris started sweeping floors in his local repair shop right after high school. After fixing his first vehicle he became hooked on auto repair. He watched every job being done and jumped in when he could. At the end of the day Chris would run through the whole day over in his head to figure how he could improve it the next time. He pushed himself to become the absolute best at everything he did. When Chris bought his own place, he had to give himself a crash course in diagnostics. He did the best he thought he was capable of.

After Chris closed his business down, he started to realize that his way of doing things was not the way to go. He was no longer happy with being “kinda sure” a car was diagnosed properly. He knew nothing of training in his area, so he hopped online. There was so much information available, and he absorbed it like a sponge.

Chris heard about the 2017 CAN conference on a youtube video. He knew he had to go. It was there that he met the group that would become the Trained By Techs team. Tomi Olivia, Brin Kline, Brian Culotta, Justin Miller, Tanner Brandt, Richard Falco, Mike Robinson and others. They talked about some of the frustrations and shortcomings of the current generation of training. After a discussion online, in which it became clear that some people weren’t familiar with a certain testing technique, what was to become TBT was born. Justin Miller put everything in motion. He shot a short video and put it online and it caught fire. The response was great. They all got together and came up with a game plan, and the rest of the story is history.

Vision 2018 came around, and Chris wanted to attend. Unfortunately, financial problems came up and he just didn’t have the money to attend. Justin Miller donated some money towards the fee, the rest of the guys came together and raised the money for airfare and hotel etc. This is what the group is about. Different people coming together from all around the country to make our industry better as a whole. Chris says, no ego, no drama.

Justin Miller is the owner of JM Diagnostics from Salt Lake City, Utah and an ASE designated Master Technician. He has paid his dues and worked in the automotiveindustry for almost 25 years now. He realized some years back that his body was not going to hold up much longer at the physical pace he had become accustomed to. Seeing it difficult to change careers completely, he decided to invest in his natural diagnostic abilities within the same industry. This internal drive he possesses has made him the top technician that he is today. “How” and “why” are the questions he constantly asks himself and must find the answers to.

A little over 2 years ago, he reached out to his peers in social media for help finding training events. It became clear that he must attend Vision in Kansas City. That event changed him. A class that he attended, taught by John Thornton, opened his eyes to so much more than he ever dreamed. He absorbed as much as he could but needed more!

Understanding the imminent shift in the industry, he began a knowledge quest and attended as many training events as he could; including CAN in Chicago in 2016 & 2017, AVI/APEX/SEMA in Las Vegas, ATE in Seattle, Automechanika in Chicago and Vision again in 2017.

At Automechanika held in Chicago in 2017, he met a diverse group of like-minded individuals. They agreed to keep in touch and communicate until they would be joined again at the next CAN Conference. They began networking and talking on a daily basis.

All this time, Justin was devoting many hours helping other technicians posting in Facebook groups looking for direction. As Justin was making suggestions for a particular posting, another person didn’t understand the testing procedure Justin was describing.

In an attempt to make it clear for everyone involved, he decided to make a video ;to clearly show how the test is completed. The response was surprising; he received great feedback and requests for more videos from his peers. At this time he approached his group with an opportunity to join him in making videos from their own experiences.

This group together has formed “Trained by Techs” and is producing videos in a wide variety of subjects to help the common technician expand their personal knowledge. It is apparent for those searching, that certain information is not easily accessible for the average technician. Understanding that many are greater than one, together they are striving to improve the industry and the stigma associated with “auto mechanics”.

Brian Culotta lives in Willoughby, Ohio and works at Dave’s Auto Care. He is the Shop Foreman/Diagnostician/Master Technician. Brian holds ASE certs: A1-A8 (master) L1, L3. He has 15 years experience and has held a wrench ever since he was a baby. His father is a retired Mechanic of 50 years and his mother has owned/operated a radiator shop for over 20 years.

Brian attended Auburn career center (Junior/Senior year of High-school) and studied automotive technology. He also attended Universal Technical Institute and studied Automotive technology/Diesel Technology/Truck Refrigeration/ Industrial Hydraulics/ Ford FACT Program.

Brian started his journey like most technicians in the industry very early following in the footsteps of his parents. Growing up he was a shadow to his father. Later, in his teenage years, he spent a lot of time working at his mother’s radiator repair shop.

Brian is extremely passionate about bettering the industry and bettering himself. He attends as many training seminars as he can work into my budget and schedule.

Where To Find Trained By Techs.

Their videos live on their YouTube Channel that’s appropriately called Trained By Techs. They usually share the link to their YouTube videos on Closed Automotive Diagnostic Facebook Groups.

They can easily be found on a lot of the better technical Facebook groups and we’re often attending the best training events.

Shop Owner Stays on the Cutting Edge of Automotive Technology

Brin Kline owns Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, FL but never misses a technical training class presented by a top industry trainer. He can’t take the technician out of his business owners mindset.

Brin has set his goals to be a technical instructor at Vision KC some day. He works very hard on learning the technical side of the automotive. A proponent of day-time training and a member of many industry advisory councils like iATN and CTI.

Brin believes that every technician should take a business course to understand how business operates.

Brin Kline is owner of Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, FL. His career in automotive repair spans 17 years with nearly 8 years as an owner.

Brin knows that the automotive repair industry is ever changing.

Talking points:

Brin has earned his AAM (Accredited Automotive Manager) form AMi Automotive Management Institute.

He is passionate to raise the level of professionalism in the industry.

Brin is involved in secondary and post-secondary advisory councils and is also on the CarQuest Customer Training Advisory Board.

He is a proponent of day-time training. Consider it just like a vacation day or time off. You must book training time into your schedule if you want your technician to learn and retain.

His goal is to be a trainer at Vision. KC.

He is working with ASA in Florida and with ASA on a national level.

Brin is also on the iATN advisory council.

His biggest challenges are car count and staffing.

He is looking for a good service advisor.

Technicians should not only attend technical training to keep up with that side but also attend management training. This will help to strengthen the relationship between service advisers/managers and technicians.

Creating a shop identity by finding a specialty or niche.
