Talking Points:

Takes months to prepare and put together, document stories, real-world scenarios

Build relationships with students- students respond better to instructors that do not talk down to them, encourage networking and asking questions

Technicians often have an ego- they can fix any car, but need to also admit they don’t know everything, often feel embarrassed or afraid to ask questions

Constant reading and research on curriculum

Retention of information- poll questions and feedback

Keeping students engaged- move around the room, have students highlight and underline during class

Becoming an instructor doesn’t happen overnight- need to be seasoned over time, always someone smarter than you who you need advice from

Sometimes you need grace from your audience- constructive feedback and criticism

Dave Hobbs travels the country training technicians for Delphi Technologies. His participation in the industry is without rival. He has a strong message for you about training venues, hands-on and the sacrifice that all aftermarket trainers make in their lives to bring you training. All he wants is to have you come to class when the trainers come to your town.

Success in diagnostics often moves beyond the trouble code flowcharts by knowing how something works and why it failed. Why is this important?

Other industries are after our people, looking for their skillsets and often offering more in terms of salary and benefits. What can we do to slow that trend?

How will the independent aftermarket shop, leverage emerging technology to add more value and compete against dealers and big-box stores?

Burn Out from owners and technicians is a fact of life. Any ideas on how to prevent it?

Will emerging technology thin the number of shops or will there be ways to keep just competent enough to squeak by?

Where is our training going to come from? Will training methods change? Will be going to OEM training?

Renowned Industry Trainer Says Our Technology is The Carrot at The End of The Stick To Entice Recruitment Into the Industry and to Keep Our A Techs.

Dave Hobbs, Lead Technical Trainer and Program Developer at Delphi Product & Service Solutions, has been in the aftermarket for over 30 years living his passion teaching technicians about repairing new technology.

He is on the cutting edge with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and discussed the challenges with calibrating repaired systems. This interview covers his start in the industry, what it takes to create a training seminar and that he sees great opportunities for A techs even if they want to move to a new city, to find the right situation, and work for a top shop.

“You never grow old until you stop learning”. Henry Ford

As it relates to training and new technology: Are you keeping up? Are you participating in the many regional training programs that are becoming the norm today? Have you attended one? How many hours per year are you investing in to keep current or stay relevant?

You need to listen to technicians talk about keeping up with technology and diagnostics. Inside this episode are four technician interviews I met on a road trip in March 2016 while attending a day long seminar hosted by TST. If you need any confirmation on what the techs are saying about the need for quality training ... get listening. If you are 'always learning' then listen to your peers affirm why your commitment to training is your job security.

“You never grow old until you stop learning”. Henry Ford

I took a ‘Road Trip’ and drove about 350 miles (one way) to attend the 13th Annual Big Event, an all-day technician training seminar hosted by TST, that brings its members nationally known instructors and state of the art training. I was sure impressed with the turn out and the quality of the instruction. There were technicians from 14 different states and two countries.

TST (Technicians Service Training) is a 501(c) (3) educational not-for-profit group of dedicated technicians, shop owners and instructors committed to the continuing education of our fellow technicians. TST brings their members nationally known instructors and state of the art training.

TST is an international organization with members in four continents, chapters in four different states, and holds webcast and leader-lead on-sight training for thousands of technicians every year. Web site information is at the end of the show notes.

Besides being impressed with the lineup of instructors and training provided, in Fishkill, New York, (in the Hudson valley) my mission was to learn about this event and interview a few of the attendees. The show includes interviews with four technicians and then a recap with TST president G Jerry Truglia. (You’ve heard G previously on Episode 70 & 90). Jerry’s hospitality was top notch and he was an unbelievable host not only to me, but to every technician who attended.

Why Listen?

Get a feel for this event especially right from the career automotive technicians that were there to learn.

Listen to technicians tell their reason for attending.

Get a feel of the action and excitement of this live event and the value and importance technicians put on training.

My guests on this episode include:

Bill Fichthorn, Auto Clinic, Mahopac, NY

John Isztok, New Wave Automotive, Ringwood, NJ

Paul Spiliotis, Mobil Diagnostic & Repair Solutions, Salem, MA

David Wagner, Savage Automotive, Philadelphia, PA

Dave demonstrated why basic electric knowledge is so important and why continual training is necessary to fix today’s problem cars.

Ed Hazzard, Southeast Mobile Tech
Course: RealWorld Tip’s from a Mobile Tech
Ed had a strong message on great diagnostic disciplines and was adamant on never guessing without testing, never use wild ass guesses or the shotgun approach and never skip important test procedures.

Bernie Thompson, Automotive Test Solutions
Course: Advanced Leak Detection
Bernie is an asset to the industry as he seeks to find the best solutions to the toughest problems.
