• Hybrid training- pre-production ahead of time for online training, put videos in your PowerPoint to break up the monotonous voice, avoid internet problems, and have capabilities to pause the video when questions are asked

Matt Fanslow is the diagnostic tech/shop manager for Riverside Automotive in Red Wing, MN. His primary responsibilities are to diagnose driveability and electrical/electronic issues, and perform most all programming, coding, initializing, adaptions, etc. Basically, if it needs to be figured out or has wires, it goes to Matt. He’s been a tech since 1996. Matt is also a subject matter expert for ASE and a trainer.

Matt has participated on 18 ASE technical committees for the ASE Practice Test, A6, A7, A8, and L1 tests. He’s also done case studies for Standard Motor Products.  Matt teaches for PICO.

You would have found Matt here at AAPEX in the Pico Technology booth as well as presenting at the AAPEX/AVI Mobility Park for Pico on using the relative compression test with a Pico Scope.

Matt also does instructor lead training for Pico Technology, AES wave and ASA Midwest (Vision).  The Pico Technology gigs have him over the country, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

I attended the ASA Automotive Service Association, Connected CARS  (Congress of Automotive Repair & Service) event in Detroit on May 18th & 19th, 2017.  It was a very informative event organized by former ASA Chairman and shop owner Donny Seyfer, who brought industry trainers, automotive engineers and service professionals from all parts of North-America to learn about rapidly advancing vehicle technology.

All attendees got an important glimpse into the world of the connected car with in-depth and detailed looks at ADAS, Next Gen Vehicle Networks, V2V and the future of diagnostics.

Safety is one of the driving forces behind ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The two-day seminar brought some of the top tech trainers to bring a deeper understanding of how these systems function and what it takes to diagnose, repair and calibrate them today and in the not too distant future.

I took a ‘Road Trip’ and drove about 350 miles (one way) to attend the 13th Annual Big Event, an all-day technician training seminar hosted by TST, that brings its members nationally known instructors and state of the art training. I was sure impressed with the turn out and the quality of the instruction. There were technicians from 14 different states and two countries.

TST (Technicians Service Training) is a 501(c) (3) educational not-for-profit group of dedicated technicians, shop owners and instructors committed to the continuing education of our fellow technicians. TST brings their members nationally known instructors and state of the art training.

TST is an international organization with members in four continents, chapters in four different states, and holds webcast and leader-lead on-sight training for thousands of technicians every year. Web site information is at the end of the show notes.

Besides being impressed with the lineup of instructors and training provided, in Fishkill, New York, (in the Hudson valley) my mission was to learn about this event and interview a few of the attendees. The show includes interviews with four technicians and then a recap with TST president G Jerry Truglia. (You’ve heard G previously on Episode 70 & 90). Jerry’s hospitality was top notch and he was an unbelievable host not only to me, but to every technician who attended.
