Rick Escalambre is a retired instructor, after 31 years, from Skyline College in San Bruno, CA. He shows no signs of slowing down and continues to teach in an adjunct role. He is also a contract trainer throughout the industry. Rick serves on the Vision Educator Think Tank and can always be counted on to make some important and profound contributions to the forum. Scott Brown is an ASE Master Certified Automobile Technician with over three and a half decades of professional service industry experience. He and his wife own Connie & Dick’s Service Center Inc., a 57-year-old independent shop in Southern California.

With a strong focus on engine performance and electronics, Scott began collaborating with other industry professionals, online, beginning in the early 90’s. Scott is the former president of iATN. Scott is now launching Diagnostic Network; The Network for Vehicle Diagnosticians and Service Industry Professionals. Tim Dwyer is an automotive education specialist at ConsuLab, a manufacturer, and provider of automotive training aids. After 25 years of ownership, he sold his business Superwrench Import Auto in Tulsa, OK to pursue a teaching career at Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology. Soft skills as a technician, shop owner and educator are critically important.

There is about a 50% or more attrition rate in the number of students that start post-secondary automotive programs and graduate. There are many reasons for this, however, it is a large number.

Automotive careers may not necessarily include turning wrenches for your entire life. There are so many job opportunities in the industry.
The skills of our technicians are wanted by other industries. There are many reasons we are losing our talent to include, training, support, career path, pay and benefits among many others.
Why aren’t there more students landing at independent shops? The dealer networks are in communication with the college and instructors.
- Workaround their schedules is a barrier.
- Students want to know what type of internship work they will do. They do not want to be in the lube bay for the entire program.
- Get them exposed to challenges inside the shop.
We are in the world of major software technology as vehicles are running more computer code than ever.
We are working in a mold of education that has a lot of debt to it and we need to break the mold.
Automotive technology programs at all levels are expensive. The cost per student is high. But looking at the needs of the community, there is high demand for skilled technicians that can outweigh an economic downturn. Industry must get involved in the advisory boards at these schools.
Independents must attend career fairs and speak to classes at all levels including middle school.
Quality of teaching time is going down because of admin and committee work.
Articulation agreements with high school programs are needed to bring the students with college credit into post-secondary.
Education gets rewarded, but experience doesn’t. To bring quality experienced professionals into the education system there needs to be a change.
- Instructors with real-world experience need to understand how to teach.
Industry and education need to come together stronger than ever. The industry has a depth of talent that can help the education system. [Scott Brown]

Talking points:

Most instructors have migrated from industry.
Not many current students of automotive technology consider a career as an instructor.
The technician shortage predicates an instructor shortage in the future.
Scott Norman is asked all the time if he can help find instructors for other schools.
Retiring instructors need replacements. There are not many in the pipeline; therefore some programs are shutting down.
An instructor automotive technology challenges:
- Pay
- Certifications: Meeting education requirements.
There are aftermarket opportunities for trainers as suggested by Ryan Kooiman.
Becoming a full-time automotive instructor is a viable career path for working technicians.
As an instructor, you are not handed a script. You need to create your own lessons.
You may have the technical ability but also need presentation skills.
- Mentoring and finding the future leaders/instructors will be necessary.
There is more to engaging students than just having the experience.
You can learn to teach … your experience is the valuable asset.
Teaching is a definite career change. The subject matter is the same but the job description is totally different.
The money is a big factor in the teacher role. They will want to take a pay cut to become an educator. There are benefits. Days not as long. Time off in Summer.

BIO

Carm Capriotto is a career member of the automotive aftermarket. His experience on the jobber and distribution side of the industry kept his focus directly on the service professional. He held many roles, from company president to executive positions in store operations, systems and sales.

Carm admires the extremely successful service professional. “There is an entrepreneurial spirit there that makes them stand out.”
When Carm left the corporate world, he chose podcasting as the medium to present and share individual stories of success.
As the premier aftermarket podcaster, the ‘Voice of the Aftermarket’, he has not only spotlighted personal stories of achievement of service professionals, he has interviewed aftermarket business coaches, trainers, technicians, educators, students, association executives and female shop owners. Carm says ‘It’s like 60 minutes meets NPR’.
Along with two new podcasts each week, he hosts a single subject Town Hall Academy. The forum is lead by aftermarket industry colleagues and is broadcast live on Facebook and repurposed as a seminar.
In March 2018 Remarkable Results Radio Podcast hit the 300th episode milestone. Listen to a very special episode as Carm, for the first time, is interviewed by past podcast guests.
In September 2017 Carm was honored with the 2017 Mort Schwartz Excellence In Education Award from the Auto Care Association.

Rick Escalambre earned his Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts from San Francisco State University. He taught full-time at Skyline College in San Bruno, CA for 31 years. In June 2015, he retired from full-time teaching and continues to teach part-time and do contract training. In addition to teaching Engine Performance related subjects, he coordinated one of the largest and finest automotive programs in the State of California.

Rick previously taught high school automotive courses, managed a Chevron Service Station and owned a general automotive repair business in Concord, CA.

For nine years he was the Chairperson for the former Bureau of Automotive Repair Smog Check Education Advisory Committee. He is a past president and current newsletter editor for the California Automotive Teachers (CAT) Association. Currently, Rick is a member of the NASTF Education Committee.

Skyline College’s facility, equipment, dynamometers and vehicles allowed him to conduct extensive in-depth research of OBD II System Operation & Diagnosis, and Evaporative Emission Systems. Rick is a respected author and editor of books in the field of Engine Performance, Evaporative Emission Systems, and Computer Controls.

Rick’s goal is to provide information that will help teachers and technicians perform their respective jobs more effectively.

Rick was honored in 2015 with the VISION Educator of the Year honor.

Research is an important part of teaching, even writing, but that time is being reduced because of admin work.

- Regarding licensing, he likes Canada’s program they have a true apprentice programs and standards that show proficiency
As one of the highest revenue generating industries, we are united but divided.
- We call aftermarket professionals independent and that mislabeling has a negative impact on the industry.
In California, if you bring your own tools you get paid double minimum wage.
Shops today need to recruit from the colleges and develop a mentorship/apprentice program. See Mike Davidson’s podcast here pertaining for a program for growing your own techs.
What to look for in a college graduate; Attitude, Attendance, Appearance, are they Trainable, can they Learn how to fix cars. The above and an apprentice program to gain work experience makes a top technician.
