Talking Points:

Greg Buckley

Are we as a profession proactive or reactive to change? Some are miles ahead while others won’t get out of the gate. Why? Is it a mindset? Opportunity? or do some think it’s time for a sunset.

It’s not so much what we do has changed, but how we do it certainly has.

Are there collaborations or partnerships that will be needed for our success that we don’t even know yet?

Less shops / more cars / lower ARO?

And again – Miles Driven Per Capita vs Volume Of Miles Driven. Miles driven won’t necessarily decrease in the future, in fact, they’ll probably increase. But who will be driving them? Individuals, fleets, autonomous?

Colleen Yarger

Technician training internal and external for ADAS and Electric Cars.

I’m working on hosting ADAS classes at the shop along with purchasing a connecting shop to support the parameters for calibrating these cars.

Creating a more ‘on-demand’ guest experience.

Text message capability with after-hour support. A web portal that will allow people to speak directly to me. And of course, using Shopware!

Setting clear defined goals for my team and hiring like-minded individuals.

We all want multiple shop locations 🙂

Matt Lachowitzer

Small shops will have the biggest challenge to keep up. Most of these won’t be able to afford to and as you stated, there will ultimately be way fewer shops in the future.

The technician shortage continues to grow, how are we going to be able to staff our stores with the top talent?

More and more people are leasing than ever before, how do we adapt?

How do we continue to move away from just fixing cars and making ourselves stand out and be an experience and a destination for our guests so we aren’t a commodity?

How do we as an industry continue to grow and keep up with the constant change?

How do we continue to provide the best training available to our teams?

Scott Brown

Technical challenges – If you’re a multi-carline shop I can only see it becoming extremely difficult to maintain the technical competencies required to deliver professional-grade service.

One of the drivers of the 1st bullet is the lack of highly qualified technicians. Some OEM’s provide the framework for growth, on the independent side not so much. NASTF’s vision for Road to Great Technicians is a great starting point.

Consumers – The automobile is one of the most complex devices most humans interact with daily and most don’t understand the technical competencies a service provider must possess in order to properly service their vehicle.

Frank Leutz

The Future Concept. Every Service Experience Point We Thought we Knew Changes Completely

The future will entail a much more consumer based experience with themes leading away from the actual service work and more towards “Charge & Chill” “Vibe & Drive” , “Pit & Lit” , “Volt & Jolt”, –I

Investment and Training in Hospitality Critical (aside from the normal TECH Training)

Partnerships with Restaurants Concepts

Increasing Value in The Marketplace

Replacing the Oil Service With Family Fun Based Experiences

Battery Disposal Services

Vehicle-Based Subscription Partnerships

Carolyn Coquillette

The pace of technical innovation is not going to slow. We must adapt or die.

Good news is that we are the technologists. That’s good job security.

As we figure out how to adapt, health care is a good potential reference point: how it is facing this challenge in a similar way, enabling humans to make sound decisions based on their own priorities.

Additionally, jumping onto what Greg and Matt mentioned, participation in networks is going to be essential, both for car count (future fleets) and technical support (avoiding isolation, esp. for smaller shops). Enter cloud-based shop management, technician forums, industry advocacy, and associations, all of which are represented here on this panel.

RR 469: Technology and Telematics Forum 2019

This episode contains transformational information that you’ll need to know and want to know. The more you know the better decisions you’ll make in steering the strategy of your business. Better yet the knowledge will keep you on your tech edge.

We heard topics ranging from the psychological effect of autonomous vehicles, simulated augmented reality testing, and specific strategies from Ford and GM. We learned about the work of Debra Bezzina the Managing Director of the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. Privacy, Vehicle Data and Cybersecurity are huge topics and we covered them a lot recently and for you, knowing as much as you can will help get laws passed that will not only benefit your clients but the aftermarket.

You may be skeptical, hesitant and maybe you just don’t the magnitude of this issue. Privacy laws could potentially derail the current aftermarket shop owner’s business model due to bad legislation and confusion. As you school yourself with this episode step up and get behind the effort for privacy, data and cybersecurity.

Key Talking Points

Shop owners must understand that it is time that someone has to pay attention, educate and protect your clients as it relates to ownership and access to their data. Privacy, Data Ownership and Cyber-security.

Policy makers don’t understand how data affects repairs

We must ensure that our policymakers don’t overreact or reach too far.

We need to be careful because once the bill gets signed it will take the next five years for them to revisit it. We will be stuck with that policy

Data Access, Think Telematics?

One of the pieces not covered in the 12-year right repair service information battle

As a shop owner, we hear it but we don’t know what it’s all about

The legislation issues concerning Privacy, Data Ownership and Cyber-security.

Cyber-security protections are growing in California

A major concern as an industry is overreach and we are collateral damage

In an effort to protect consumers, the policymakers go too far.

Regarding privacy, there must be some separations

3rd party providers

OEM Websites

We don’t want anything to interfere with our current business model.

The industry must get behind efforts being mounted in Washington

Developing coalition, Writing campaign, and Visits to Washington

Part of this is also education when the policymakers go home, they must hear from shop owners and understand that access is critical for the consumer and to maintain safe and reliable transportation

The previous Administration ordered a guideline for cyber-security which allowed for 50 state laws potentially dealing with our issues which is not workable

We need the Federal Government to lay out guidelines for cyber and privacy

Owners with multiple shops will have problems if their shops are located at different states.

California Bill

It is about dealing with consumer privacy.

A bill passed last summer is going to impact businesses

This could happen to different states

Michigan tapped into this

Privacy is important

Consumers deserve privacy

Within the framework of a vehicle, rolling smart technology privacy becomes a huge issue

We need to have a reasonable and effective way to handle the motoring fleet

Some consumers do not want delicate data on their vehicles shared

Insurance companies now have access to some data through 3rd party providers

As an aftermarket, we need to be involved, at a reasonable cost, in order to fix these vehicles as we have without compromising our business model.

$450 – $800 Billion Dollar Industry regarding 3rd party data monitoring cloud-based

Cyber-security

On the root level, protecting your WiFi

Having a process as it comes as a security policy

OEMs have to provide shop owners a path

Everyone is trying to figure out their place as we move forward including new car dealers

Privacy piece will drive everything and data access will have to be addressed at some point

The Power of Peer To Peer Help.

When you commit to helping a struggling service professional you help lift all ships. The tough part is starting the engagement. When a shop owner asks for guidance that is the first step to really make change. The teacher arrives only when the student does.

It is very altruistic in nature to help a colleague. These actions help the entire industry. Marginal operations contribute to a negative image problem. A stronger independent service industry brings strength to the industry and compounds success.

Together everyone blossoms and grows as servants to the motoring public. This episode shares a few examples and starts to write the action items you need to take to build a stronger aftermarket.

Talking points:

We are getting more from each other through golden nuggets as we meet one-on-one.

If you have a blister you need to find a solution and align yourself for help.

Find help with this podcast, reading and in social networking groups.

How does one become the CEO of their business when you need to know HR, Finance, Operations, Accounting, Technology, Culture, and Leadership among others. You are not built for expertise in every area of responsibility. It is OK to get help.

Business coaches, twenty groups, local business groups are all places to find answers and improve your success.

Local peer to peer networks are important.

Ego can be part of the solution. You must ask for help. Most everyone has gone through the challenge of building a successful business.

At the street level, we can do a better job of supporting each other.

We must do a better job of listening first. We tend to want to help by talking. You must first start with the end in mind.

Be careful of the sizzle. Be sure you are moving forward with your challenges and not just feeling good because you are listening to solutions. Doing is the big part. Being held accountable is critical.

If you help a peer you’ve got to have the time, let your family know you are going to help someone. ‘You Are Going In’. It takes a time commitment.

Groups like the local business chambers may help you from an outsiders perspective. Well-rounded business acumen is always helpful.

It is rare that other shop owners will call you for help. Reach out. Have coffee.

Strong areas around the country usually have great local association chapters and shop owners that work together to bring in training.

Get involved with a local supplier business management group.

AMi is a very strong option WEBSITE

Find out what you don’t know. Do wide eye research. Keep an open mind. Stop living in the past.

Share your marketing calendar. Get ideas on programs that could be a spark in your business. What you’ve been doing for years may not be working. Get out of your rut.
