Chris takes the common phrase, "I don't know what I don't know," and flips it to "I don't know THAT I don't know."

Want a Delphi Fuel Tank Cleaning Tool? Delphi Technologies, a brand of BorgWarner, is offering free samples of their cleaning tool. Supplies are limited, so request one today by emailing: internalcommunications.aftermarket@borgwarner.com

There are 65 million work trucks on the road in the United States and Canada- a lot of work trucks have been worked hard with the fleet during the past 2 years

Most fleets are less than four vehicles

We often have to think about the aftermarket part of that. Is it going to be a rebuildable part? Is it gonna be a part that as intellectual property is not available to be sold in the aftermarket? How do we make sure that it’s gonna be available when that vehicle comes out of warranty?

The fuel being put in your gas tank today is different than it was 10 years ago

80% of the failures have been caused by contamination in the fuel tank.

Delphi Technologies has designed a tool that is about 15 inches long and has a swiveling head on the end that has three magnets built into it. It has a replaceable cloth that you put on that. You take this tool, and you drop it straight down into the tank, and you push it around edge to edge, and if there are metal particles stuck to that magnet, your tank is contaminated

Industry Leaders Update Right to Repair Act & Discuss AAPEX 2021 [RR 698]

AAPEX 2021 went off without a hitch, despite the constant changes in regulations and mandates as it related to COVID. I was there and now get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what it took to successfully launch AAPEX, plus, an important update on the Right to Repair Act and the future of our industry. Serious stuff here. While you’re listening to this episode take out your phone, go to repairact.com and be an active voice. It’s time to tell Congress you support the Right to Repair Act! If you earn your living in the independent aftermarket you need to get behind this.

Secure Vehicle Interface - Standards Evolve as the Vehicle is Part of a Larger Transportation System - Joe Register [RR 582]

We are talking about Secure Vehicle Interface or SVI. We can’t get enough information on the plethora of technology that is happening at an enormous rate. My guest is Joe Register the Vice-President Emerging Technologies at the AutoCare Association. I love talking to Joe and we’ve done episodes in the past with big uptakes on technology. Joe also brought slides with him so we have the video on our youtube channel and on the show page on the website.

Joe Register has over 40 years of experience delivering progressive system solutions to companies in every channel of the Automotive Aftermarket. This is our third interview and we are also doing an ADAS update look for that soon. I love listening to Joe as he is so well connected through his work in helping to create tech and interface standards with ISO (International Organization for Standards) and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).

My guest is Joe Register who is the Vice-President Emerging Technologies at the AutoCare Association. This is his second interview. His first episode was episode 381 which talks about SVI (Secure Vehicle Interface).

Joe Register has over 40 years of experience delivering progressive system solutions to companies in every channel of the Automotive Aftermarket. This work includes the design and implementation of enterprise systems for two startup ventures.

Joe participates as an ANSI expert assigned to ISO TC22 Road Vehicles, ISO TC204 Intelligent Transport Systems and SAE vehicle security committees. His current focus is the industry’s adoption of secure and standardized access to in-vehicle systems to ensure today’s increasingly complex vehicles can be properly maintained and repaired.

Key Talking Points:

SVI- Secure Vehicle Interface

SVI started because OE’s said you needed a single voice in order to listen and needed to know what aftermarket wanted

Mantra “Safe, secure, standardized and direct access”

Vehicles are built with ‘features’ in mind with repairs as an afterthought

Information is constantly being collected both inside and outside the vehicle (driver attention)

Vehicle data and the owner- you should be in control over who has access to the data your vehicle creates with access yourself, (Right to Repair Amendment on the ballot in Nov in Massachusetts)

Underperformed maintenance will become a big issue in the future- safety

SVI standards aren’t just for cars- standards just as applicable for smartphone apps, roadside stations

www.svi0for-mobility.org -webinar and Michelin demonstration with a flat fire

www.aapexshow.com/register

ChallengesVehicle manufacturers are resistant to collaborating with aftermarket but have made progress with suppliers that provide systems to vehicles

Technology Talk, AAPEX, ADAS, CES and More.

Chris Gardner, MAAP, is the Vice President or Programs and Member Services for AASA, the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association. AASA is the voice for the Aftermarket Supplier Industry. Chris also manages all things technology for the association and that is where we spend most of our time in this interview.

An interview highlight is Chris’s view of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that he has attended for the last three years. He’ll give you a perspective on what he saw and the impact on the aftermarket as our future rolls out, as he sees it.

Among other discussion topics ADAS and the tech he saw at CES. Chris sees a convergence of telematics with the consumer, the service professional and the supplier. We even talked a bit about smart parts.

The AASA Technology Conference is the leading technology event in the North American Automotive Aftermarket industry. He represents members on the Aftermarket Telematics Task Force, AASA Telematics Working Group, NASTF’s Equipment & Tool Committee and the AASA Vehicle Data Work Group. Gardner also provides executive oversight for all major events including AAPEX. He also manages the association’s Intellectual Property Council and manages internal staff operations.

Chris has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive industry, has received two automotive component patents, and has written dozens of articles and white papers on various automotive materials and processes.

He has been with the MEMA/AASA organization for 20 years. Gardner has a B.S. degree from North Carolina State University and Masters in Automotive Aftermarket Professional from Northwood University’s ‘University of the Aftermarket’. He has received the Northwood University Automotive Aftermarket Management Education Award.

Talking points:

AASA and the Autocare Association co-own AAPEX.

They are making technology trends a big focus of AAPEX.

The CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is getting dominated by the automakers.

Chris has attended CES in the last three years and sees more automotive engagement each year.

CES is a hype show with significant TV, On-Line and media presence.

It is a Business to Business trade show and the largest trade show in North American

Compared to AAPEX/SEMA is has about 30,000 more in attendance, which makes AAPEX/SEMA one of the largest in North America.

Many CES presentations this past year included Smart Cities

Chris reports these observations from CES:

Virtual heads-up display.

Virtual dashboard controls.

Predictive analysis.

Nissan demonstrated brain sensing technology for driver reactions.

Many CES presentations are not production technologies. They are showing concepts and insights into the future.

Autonomy for vehicles is here. The question is how comfortable will drivers be with the technology that allows the driver to relinquish control of the vehicle.

Will governments work together with the same rules and laws and technology?

The aftermarket has always been able to figure out new technology. It is the perfect time to learn as much as you can and embrace the future.

Successful aftermarket companies will innovate. They always have.

All major trade shows are showing an increase in attendance because of their focus on technology.

There is no clarity yet as to ownership of data and software before smart parts become a reality.

Chris sees a convergence of telematics and the consumers ability to make an appointment with their smartphone.

He’s seen a partnership with an e-tailer and a telematics company to potentially order parts and specify the brand they want.

The type of suppliers in this industry is changing.

There is a growing need for the suppliers to learn about predictive analytics, mobility technologies, dongles and telematics.

There will be smart parts in our future. There are a few hurdles to overcome. There are hundreds of companies working on this but they may not see themselves as an independent aftermarket supplier, even though they are.

AASA is creating an organization that will reach out to meet and address the needs of these companies and provide a forum to AASA’s current members.
