Key Talking Points

• Shops will have to start raising their own entry-level tech…. Shadowing and Mentoring will have to become part of the training program
• You must have a relationship with your local schools
• “You can’t build on sand, you need a foundation” be safe and have integrity with the vehicle. Cleaning bathroom, cleaning the floors etc
• How do you get people to fall in love with cars and the process of automotive repair? Less passion for ‘cars’ but they want to learn and be without debt. It’s about relationships and people. 
• From fuel injection to ABS. VVT, turbo, and stability control to ADAS technology has always advanced. Can we learn from recent past experiences to prepare (when to purchase equipment, train our people, market to the public)
• Keep up to date- what you “know” or have heard in the past may not be true today. All vehicles have a static calibration process performed when they are manufactured, which will not change. Dynamic creates a liability concern since vehicles need to be driven when the ADAS systems are not calibrated. Dynamic calibration can be difficult with weather, and road conditions.

• Team apathy- Is the owner being disengaged or having burnout?
• Maya Angelou quote –  “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” If we don’t care how the other person feels, we have failed.   
• Showing you care with customers and employees
• Leadership role- make the people your passion
• Engagement survey- is there someone at work that encourages my development? Does my supervisor care about me as a person?
• Think about the last time you had an engaged server at a restaurant- how did that make you feel?
• What are your employee roadblocks? How can you remove that roadblock for them?
• How are you doing? How are we doing? How is the company doing?
• Performance management instead of reviews
• High priority interrupts- addressing and correcting issues immediately
• Hiring process-12 step process, 3-6 weeks, meetings, writing assignments, discussions. Are you passionate about customers? How have you wowed a customer? How did you make an upset customer, happy? DISC assessment.

Jim Hayes joined the United States Army after High School where he served with elements of the Intelligence and Special Forces communities. After completing his goals in the Army, he moved to the Monterey Peninsula, where he turned his focus toward becoming a golf professional. As a member of the PGA, Jim held the title of Manager of Instruction for the Pebble Beach Golf Academy, where he taught golf to individuals from around the world. True to form, after achieving what he set out to accomplish in the world of golf, Jim transitioned to the automotive industry, where he currently serves as General Manager of Pacific Motor Service. • COO/General manager is a day-to-day role, the CEO is focused on the future. Implementing CEO vision.
• No shop is too small for a COO role
• CEO letting go- stepping back from the day-to-day customer-facing tasks, accepting and trust between each other with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. The CEO needs to want the business to grow and have COO role. 
• COO training- promote from within business who has the insights and initiative, training classes for COO, mentor, networking groups, coaching groups
• COO challenges- manage the CEO and them keep on track and direct reports below you
• COO strengths needed- Challenge COO and have different approaches without fear of being yelled at or retribution. The memory of ‘gold fish’ at times-let any negativity behind. Can’t be afraid to try new things. Stagnation kills businesses. Attention to detail- pay attention to the smallest things in business without being a micromanager. Adapt and make changes constantly. Continue to move employees forward with personal growth. Self-aware and constructive. Know the financials.
