AAPEX 2021 Service Award Winners [RR 697]

I had the privilege to speak with the AAPEX 2021 service award winners while at AAPEX. Be a fly on the wall as they discuss what it was like to receive the call that they were award winners and what it means to them. They were selected based on the guidelines of the nomination process and the final voting and filtering from industry professionals. Congrats again to Matt Fanslow, Eric and Jaime Carlson and Brittany Schindler, your awards are well deserved.

Craig Van Batenburg, AMAM, is the CEO of Automotive Career Development Center [ACDC] and a former repair shop owner. Craig is engaged full time in the understanding of the technology used in hybrid and electric cars. His 45 years of automotive experience serves him well. He travels throughout the world doing training on Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. Previous Episodes HERE.

Cameron Lee-Ernie Lee’s Service Center was founded in 1972 by Cameron’s grandfather. His father and Cameron now currently operate the business as a team. He went to work in the family business right out of college and started as a Tire and GS Tech and moved my way up to being the Lead Technician. Cameron serves as the Shop Manager and focuses on the day-to-day operation of the shop, developing the business, and meeting the needs of the ever-evolving aftermarket repair industry. Early in 2020 after attending Up Your Voltage by ACDC, Cameron opened another division of Ernie Lee’s known as Raleigh Hybrids due to the ever-growing demand of Hybrid and EV repair and maintenance. In many ways, his role is modernizing and expanding the family business and the development of Raleigh Hybrids was a natural progression of that.

Eric Carlson has been a technician for over 40 years. His formal automotive education came from Ferris State University where he took all 8 ASE tests prior to graduation in 1977. Eric has re-certified every 5 years since. He took the L1 when it was introduced and is now L3 hybrid certified. Full disclosure: Eric is a subject matter expert for ASE and has participated in writing test questions, in the past 2 years, for the L3 test.

Eric and his wife Jamie bought Ervine’s in 1994 and added Grand Rapids Hybrid to the family in 2013 after Eric became the first Master Hybrid Service Technician in Grand Rapids, MI. Eric has been interviewed by several local television stations and publications seeking his expertise on everything from basic maintenance to the ramifications of “Right to Repair” legislation. Ervine’s Auto Repair and Grand Rapids Hybrid became an ASE Blue Seal of Excellence shop when it was introduced and have been since. This is our second year in a row to visit a shop in Las Vegas at the end of Industry Week. We were welcomed with open arms at Ted Wien’s Tire and Auto. Our gracious host Jennifer Wiens not only shared her thoughts on the episode but presented a great tour of her facility.

Remember shop tours go both ways. It is good to take them, but also important to host them. You can learn from both. Be open, honest and constructive and benefit from the investment of your time to learn from your peers.

You’ll learn the value of shop tours from these guests,

Michigan Shop Owner Makes Hybrids His Specialty Niche

Eric Carlson from Ervine’s Auto Repair and Grand Rapids Hybrids has found that his specialty in Hybrids has been a welcome addition to his business and his market is responding. With hybrids as loaners, his hybrid business is growing at an unexpected rate.

Eric shares his story that includes the purchase, 24 years ago, of a business that was on its last leg. His supplier gave him a heads up on the opportunity. Eric has been recognized multiple times as the NAPA Technician of the Year, in the Grand Rapids region. He also tells about his commitment to ASE and the time he was as a subject matter expert. He helped work on the Hybrid tests.

(Pictured above Eric and Jamie Carlson)

Eric has been a technician for over 40 years. His formal automotive education came from Ferris State University where he took all 8 ASE tests prior to graduation in 1977. Eric has re-certified every 5 years since. He took the L1 when it was introduced and is now L3 hybrid certified. Full disclosure: Eric is a subject matter expert for ASE and in the past two years has participated in writing test questions for the L3 test.

Eric and his wife Jamie bought Ervine’s in 1994. In 2013, they added Grand Rapids Hybrid to the family after Eric became the first Master Hybrid Service Technician in Grand Rapids, MI.

Talking Points:

Ervine’s came about because Eric asked his supplier to keep his eye out for a potential shop to buy. He and Jamie found a great opportunity in Ervine’s.

Most painful lessons on running the business were his most expensive lessons. In his previous job, he learned how not to run a business so he did the opposite when he opened his own business.

His biggest learning curve was the responsibility to feed all the families that worked for him.

He participated as an ASE subject matter expert on hybrids.

He was amazed and respectful for the time it takes to get an ASE test question right.

He took a Hybrid safety class and that peaked his interest and that set him on a path to become a Hybrid specialist.

He started to look for a training program and found Craig and Deb Van Batenberg at ACDC. (hear them in episode 116)

At the time of the interview, he had 5 hybrids in the shop for repair.

Most of the work is not Hybrid specific. He is doing brakes, HVAC type work.

He believes that the impact of a secondary brand had a bigger impact on his business than just saying that they work on hybrids. They kept the pressure on the market in creating the secondary brand. He believes this strategy paid off in spades.

He has loaner cars and believes that is a competitive edge.

He is the only tech in the shop that works on the high voltage side of hybrid repair. He is considering sending another tech to get that type of hybrid training.

Eric was in a mentoring group at the elementary level in his community.

He places the ASE logo on his building, on his business cards, in the shop and is proud to say the certifications separate the wheat from the chaff.

Do the consumers, technicians and shop owners appreciate the value ASE brings to the aftermarket? This Academy forum takes on this question.

Join ASE’s Trish Serratore and shop owners Amy Mattinat and Eric Carlson in an important discussion on the value proposition of ASE. We talk consumer education, the importance of messaging from the top down has a big factor if the technicians will keep up their certifications and become a Master Technician. The discussion flows to consumer awareness and the new ASE site geared to consumer knowledge and awareness of ASE.

ASE has been around since 1972. They are the only industry driven credentials in the industry. Getting behind ASE certifications will be a strong differentiator as technology and the skilled workforce

Amy Mattinat

Amy Mattinat of Auto Craftsmen in Montpelier, VA had the good fortune to combine her love of cars with a career in the automotive industry. Whether going on ride-and-drives, teaching car care clinics or running her independent repair shop she is able to combine her two passions: educating the public, especially women, about car care so they can make informed decisions and educating young women about the many career opportunities available in the auto care industry.

Amy was awarded the National Women in Auto Care’s ‘Top Female Shop Owner of the Year’ in 2012 and served as President of the Women in Auto Care 2014 through 2016.

Trish Serratore

Trish Serratore is the President of the National Automotive Technicians Education foundation (NATEF) and Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) and Senior Vice President at ASE. She works closely with all of the organizations within the ASE Industry/Education initiative, which also includes ASE and the Automotive Training Managers Council, to help provide the qualified automotive professionals the industry needs today and tomorrow.

Among many honors, in 2010, Trish was named one of the “Top 100 Women in the Automotive Industry” by Automotive News.

Eric Carlson

Eric has been a technician for over 40 years. His formal automotive education came from Ferris State University where he took all 8 ASE tests prior to graduation in 1977. Eric has re-certified every 5 years since. He took the L1 when it was introduced and is now L3 hybrid certified. Full disclosure: Eric is a subject matter expert for ASE and has participated in writing test questions, in the past 2 years, for the L3 test.

Talking Points:

Eric Carlson will only hire technicians that are ASE Certified. His position is to be sure that every technician was going to become a Certified Master Automotive Technician. All his current technicians are CMAT.

The messaging from the top down has a big factor if the technicians will keep up their certifications and become a Master Technician.

We need to educate the consumer on where to find ASE certified technicians.

Amy promotes the value that ASE certifications mean to her customer.

300,000 ASE certified technicians as of this interview.

Eric is a subject matter expert and has worked on the creation of ASE test questions.

Amy suggests if you have stayed away from ASE because you are not a good test taker, start with your Brake certification first, because you know brakes so well. Gain the confidence.

ASE has a new consumers web presence: ase.com/drivers
