Let’s Honor Our Peers

I need your help.

We have so many outstanding professional automotive service specialists in our midst. We know them as peers, friends, team members, and associates.

It is again time for the AAPEX Service Awards, a platform that recognizes excellence and sets a benchmark for the entire industry. The Awards recognize the Shop Owner, Service Advisor, and Technician of The Year, and your nominations play a crucial role in shaping the future of our industry.

The application process has become easier. We encourage you to contact a nominee and ask them to help you complete it. We also brought a group of industry leaders together to review the application, and their input made it more streamlined.

I know you know great shop owners with great service advisors and technicians worthy of a nomination. We are all advocates of this great industry, and what better way is there to nominate or encourage your networking groups to nominate one of their peers?

You can nominate by August 16 but must finish the application by August 31st, 2024. In many cases, we’ve received incomplete nominations due to a lack of information, which is why the two-week follow-up time is crucial. Please ensure the application is complete and submitted on time.

With your help, we can recognize the most deserving individuals. Your role in this process is not just important; it is critical. Your active participation in nominating and encouraging others makes these awards possible. Please forward this post and keep reminding your friends.

Let’s make this year exceptional in terms of the number of nominees we will consider.

Thank you for your support and friendship.

 Making Music

I’m fascinated to watch documentaries on, ‘The Making of an Album’. I’ve seen some on Pink Floyd and Queen, just to name two. Sometimes, we see the artist or entire band sitting at the mixing council, talking about how the song came to be.

It is rare not to talk about the collaboration of the producer, writer(s), performers, and engineers. To see how records come together with the genius of the collaborators working for the goodness of the record.

I started to think about how running a business is like making a record. Just like in the music industry, where a singer, producer, writer, and engineer all work together to create a masterpiece, the same principles apply to running a successful business.

The singer represents the visionary leader of the business. They set the tone and direction for the company, just like a singer sets a song’s melody and vocal style. In many cases, they’ve written the words and music. Their passion and charisma inspire others to follow their lead.

The producer, in this analogy is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the record (think business). They are in the integrator role and bring a load of creativity to the record (think George Martin of Beatles fame). The producer ensures that all elements of a song come together harmoniously. They coordinate with different departments and make sure that everyone is working towards achieving common goals and that the vision of the band and writers is brought to the market.

The writer in this scenario is responsible for crafting compelling messages and narratives that resonate with customers. They create engaging content, such as marketing materials or blog posts, that effectively communicate the brand’s story and values. Just like lyrics bring meaning to a song, well-crafted copy brings meaning to a brand.

Lastly, we have the engineer who ensures that everything technical works seamlessly. In business terms, this could be an IT expert or web developer who maintains systems and keeps technology running smoothly behind the scenes. In many of our small shops, this hat is worn by multiple people, most likely the owner. Similar to an audio engineer who fine-tunes sound levels and balances instruments in a recording studio.

Incredible things can happen when these roles work together cohesively in both music-making and business operations. Collaboration between individuals with different skill sets leads to innovation, creativity, and, ultimately, success.

Running a business shares many similarities with making records – it requires collaboration between individuals with different roles but shared goals. By recognizing these parallels between music-making and entrepreneurship, we can gain valuable insights into how businesses can thrive by leveraging teamwork and harnessing each individual’s unique strengths.

Take this story to your people in your next meeting, you may be surprised by the flow of ideas that will happen. Remind them, that as a team, they are ‘making music.’

Are you Done Trying?

You put in the hard work, the late nights, and the inevitable 2 AM wake-up. You are trying your hardest to serve clients, maintain a great team, and make money, yet this isn’t the dream you had when you started.

Is it time to stop going through the motions and start making real progress? Is it time to stop settling and start living the life you truly want? Far too often, we convince ourselves that we’ve reached our limits, tried our hardest, and that achieving our dreams is impossible. But is that really the case?

We let fear, self-doubt, and the opinions of others hold us back from reaching our full potential. We tell ourselves that it’s not worth the effort, that the risk is too high, that we’ll never succeed.

But what if I told you that your mindset is the only thing standing in your way? That with the right attitude and determination, you can overcome any obstacle? It’s time to silence that negative self-talk and start believing in yourself. It is the person in the mirror.

The path to success is rarely a straight line. There will be setbacks, failures, and moments of frustration. But those are the moments that truly define us. How we respond to adversity determines whether we’ll achieve our goals. The rewards of perseverance are far greater than the comfort of giving up.

It’s time to stop going through the motions and start making real progress: no more excuses or half-measures. Far too often, we let ourselves off the hook, telling ourselves we’ve “tried our best” when the truth is, we haven’t pushed ourselves nearly as hard as we’re capable of.

Your moment is now. No more waiting, no more wondering. It’s time to stop trying and start doing. The future you want is within reach, but only if you’re willing to reach out and grab it. So what are you waiting for? The clock is ticking – the question is, are you ready to make your move? I hope so.

I can help. Email me, and I’ll send you some episodes to listen to to recharge your battery and take critical next steps to fulfill your destiny and self-worth.

Get to Night School

Recently, I got to thinking about night school, or what is commonly called today’s adult learning. Why would you want to do that unless you wanted to learn more about a hobby, interest, or business? What hit me was that hiring a business coach for an established business is akin to going to night school. Let that sink in for a moment.

Just as night school provides valuable supplementary education to working professionals, a business coach can offer invaluable insights and guidance to help take your established business to new heights. So many top shop operators credit their business and personal success to hiring a business coach or joining a networking group.

After years of running a business, it’s easy to become set in your ways and overlook new growth opportunities. A business coach brings a fresh perspective and industry expertise that can unlock your business’s full potential. They serve as an objective sounding board, questioning your assumptions and encouraging you to explore new, innovative strategies. This dynamic approach can be a game-changer for your business.

Just as night school students acquire skills to advance their careers, working with a business coach equips you with the tools and knowledge to elevate your business. From streamlining operations to enhancing your leadership abilities, a skilled coach can help you identify and address your company’s challenges. This investment in your professional development can lead to significant returns in the form of increased efficiency, profitability, and long-term sustainability. It’s a strategic move that can set your business on a path to continuous growth.

Don’t let your business stagnate. Embrace the guidance of a business coach and watch your company reach new levels of success, much like a night school student who emerges with enhanced expertise. The path to business growth is paved with continuous learning and improvement – a business coach can be your guide along that journey.
