Now Tech Talk 9 with Bob Heipp, Peter Landry and Matt Fanslow. This outspoken trio ponders training in a big way since we recorded this at vision. It was a perfect topic since Vision of the Premier training event. As it is typical with this trio they didn’t hold back and we had some fun.

We cover what it takes to be a trainer, what type of student are you, hands-on, play or research and critical thinking just to name a few.

Bob Heipp works for Mobile Auto Solutions, LLC as lead tech and Technician Manager in the Chicago metropolitan area and northwest Indiana.

Having accepted a job that required passing an IM240 emission class, he was introduced to new alternatives for diagnostic testing. This spurred a quest for learning.

Bob believes his desire to learn is what opened doors to meeting technicians around the world. Hoping to help so others could have the same opportunities, he partnered with ASA-IL and initiated the CAN Conference after one of his favorite conferences (the Linder Conference) was no longer being presented. He considers these experiences have led him to the opportunity to work for Mobile Auto Solutions. Bob is also a dedicated Vision High Tech Training and Expo attendees. Hear Bob in his own interview and the roundtables HERE.

Peter Landry is an ASE L1 Master Automotive Technician from Brookfield, WI. Peter has a strong automotive background in electronics, network, and driveability diagnostics. His prowess for fixing problem vehicles and passion for staying up on emerging technologies led him from Landry’s Mobile Diagnostics, a mobile diagnostics and module programming business servicing the Milwaukee Metro area to working for Mobile Auto Solutions Hear Peter’s interviews HERE.

Key Talking Points:

What does it take to be a top technician

The diagnostician is put, sometimes on a pedestal and classified as ‘elite’

We cannot forget the value in the R & R technicians. They are important and have different skill sets than a diagnostician

Diagnostician needs the R & R technician to complete many of the jobs that they diagnose.

Bob: Some classes are not good. Some of the best trainers need to be paid a decent wage

Bigger classes and quality of the material either isn’t good or not enough time to cover

The higher you get in your ability the less training is there for youThe higher you get the more you see where there is wrong information out there.

“It must be true”. Must verify

Peter:Wrong does not mean inaccurate

Some of our best trainers are not compensated enough A lot of work required to become a great trainer

Best way to learn is hands-onThe more senses you use the better for retention

B and C techs are very valuable to a shop. They generate a tone of work and revenue

Identify what type of learner you are:Can you recall where to go for the information

Note-taking

Reading white papers

Do it

How can the training help me and how can I apply it?

Training manuals need to be easy to read

Take good notes because some information is not included until you write it down

Hands-on training is tough to doFacility, logistics, vehicles, helper

Localizing National Training

Some are natural at what they doThe Chess analogy

How far can you go

You can hit your limit, live within it. Keep striving

Networking can be a big advantage Introduce yourself at a training session to the trainer or to all the techs around you

Get phone numbers, emails

Networking outside of leader-led training is social media

Technician’s job is to make their owner money.Owners job is to share with the team

Summary What does it take to be a technician today

Hands-on

How will training help me

Reading, math skills

When you teach you learn

What type of learner you are

Technician Talk 7 - Professionalism and More

This outspoken trio wonders how professionalism is bred, how it starts and how it can be compartmentalized. Everyone must step up and set the bar high for others to emulate and follow.

My guests for Tech Talk 7 are Bob Heipp, Peter Landry and Matt Fanslow. These guys also wonder why shops that are not equipped to service certain vehicles advertised that they can.
Key Talking Points:

Speaking of NACE/Automechanika we have a participation problem when it comes to valuing technician and management training.

Just the local shops in the greater Atlanta region should have sold out every class.

First class trainers with first class content.

Why are technicians demanding training from their owners.

Why are owners not sending their techs to training.

Imagine very affordable training, highest quality training available in the 9th largest metropolitan city in the US with 5.8 million people. How many shop owners and technicians do you think earn their livings there?

The power of building your personal network when you attend training, local, regional or national. It is the most valuable

Concept of a training mentor to help get max benefit from training events.

A path to improve your diagnostics skills may be stifled in shops because management is not investing in the proper equipment or software. Some techs who are not encouraged with training and equipment support will just want to do ball joints and brakes because that is where the money is.

The financial burden to purchase diagnostics equipment is too great on a technician.

A shop with heavy diagnostic capabilities can market themselves to other independent shops in the area. Everyone makes money and customers get satisfied.

Working with shops in your market to support each other’s capabilities.

Are you enabling a shop who does not do diagnostics?

A fine line among this group.

ADAS.

Discussion on a Subaru blind spot calibration.

ADAS education for Bob Heipp is coming from classes but mostly from reading service information, by performing the task while reading the service information.

ADAS will pose a challenge in mechanical shops if and when a bumper or grill needs to come off to do a particular job.

ADAS aftermarket installs. A future in add-ons??

Windshield replacements need calibrations.

ROI on diagnostic equipment and a diagnostician

A Wide-Open Discussion from Three Aftermarket Technicians on Mentoring, Fundamentals Training and Mentoring Under a Master Technician

This technician roundtable brings back Matt Fanslow, Bob Heipp, and Peter Landry in our fifth roundtable interview. It is freewheeling, smart and evident that these three are very passionate about their career and industry.

We discussed technician pay and the need for shop owners to improve their profits, so the industry can pay better. We talked about technicians that take their education and skill set seriously and are constantly pushing to expand on them. They also tossed around the answer to this question: ‘What is a True Master Technician?’ We also talked fundamentals, and specialization and a whole lot more.

Agree or disagree with these three diagnosticians they’ve got opinions. You be the judge.

Key Talking Points:

Value of training, networking, daytime training.

The shop needs to be profitable enough to pay for training and techs wages to find full benefit from daytime training.

The technician needs to show his worth to the shop owner in order to warrant an investment of training.

Should the investment in training be considered being put on the Balance Sheet as an Asset?

Technicians that take their education serious and skills set and want to expand on them and further will make the shop money and will need to be compensated justly.

Up to the front of the house to bill properly

When challenges come your way, sometimes you have to back away from the problem to see it clearly.

Build your network of technicians for support up to and including Facebook groups

Mentoring under a Master Technician can be an advantage and disadvantage.

What is a true Master Technician? They always go back to the basics. An example is basic electrical class. Always looking for a different way to look at things.

Everyone in the trade must consider and keep in mind that the word fundamental does not mean easy. So, taking a fundamental class may not necessarily be easy.

Specialization. Where is it heading according to the panel?

Play to your strengths

System specialization could be a possibility

Alignment, diagnostics, Air Conditioning, etc.

The shop should use their technicians’ talent and bring in the work they excel at.

Wide Open Discussion from Three Aftermarket Technicians and One Who Left the Industry.

As usual, these guys brought their opinionated selves to the interview, yet spoke from the heart about topics they are passionate about. Some no holds barred discussion points. There are times where there is no sugar coating and that is good to embrace all sides of an issue.

Matt Fanslow, Bob Heipp, Peter Landry and Tom Myers openly discuss some very hot and touchy subjects that affect all aftermarketer’s.

Just a few of the topics we discussed, shops charging for diagnostic time, opinions on social media, a discussion on augmented reality. They discuss that techs need to help the business owner make money, and therefore owners should share in the wealth. We talk about shop owners training their top and best-vested technicians and talk pay and benefits.

Special guest Tom Myers (episode 158) left the industry. Still is a technician working for a forklift repair company.

Tom’s suggestions to keep techs:

Reward your techs who are putting in the effort for being committed to your business

Pay for great training and don’t leave it up to the technician.

He went to Vision every year on his own dime. The shop should have paid or met him halfway.

He gets $300/year for tool purchases and $150/year for boot allowance.

Paid uniforms and cleaning.

Benefits designed for family time and retirement.

Tom is concerned that shops are not taking on the tough diagnostic work because they don’t understand how to charge for the testing time. (See Town Hall Academy on this subject.
Wide Open Discussion from Three Aftermarket Technicians on Technician Pay, Benefits, Training and MORE!

Matt Fanslow, Bob Heipp and Peter Landry openly discuss some very hot and touchy subjects that effects all aftermarketer’s.

Besides technician pay and benefits, other talking points cover the commitment to forever training, getting paid for diagnostic time, ADAS, mandatory technician certification, their view of the technician shortage, and is there enough GOOD training available.

This discussion is not without its very strong perspectives that will challenge thinking and maybe convert an outlier.

Bob is also a dedicated Vision High Tech Training and Expo attendee. Hear Bob in his own interview and the roundtables HERE.

Peter Landry is an ASE L1 Master Automotive Technician from Brookfield, WI. Peter has a strong automotive background in electronics, network and driveability diagnostics. His prowess for fixing problem vehicles and passion for staying up on emerging technologies led him to form Landry’s Mobile Diagnostics, a mobile diagnostics and module programming business servicing the Milwaukee Metro area. He recently sold his business to Mobile Auto Solutions and now works for MAS. Hear Peter’s interviews HERE.

Here are talking points from the interview:

Bob Heipp recently wrote an article for ABRN.

Matt was recently interviewed in a roundtable format with Motor Age.

Fanslow is very outspoken about technician pay, benefits and training.

Not enough techs are willing to invest in themselves so why would the owner invest in them.

If you have pride you will find a way to get training.

There are no other industries like the automotive that doesn’t pay 100% for their people’s training.

Shop owners deserve to get paid for diagnostic time that affords them the monies for training and equipment.

We must value ourselves to our clients.

What about mandatory technician certification?

Fanslow: Torn by it.

Heipp: Who will carry the stick? It would be a waste of time if there is no enforcement.

He is 100% on board if it gets figured out.

Tech Shortage?

We have a shortage of competency.

We have an abundance of incompetency.

Massive problem with techs and shops is to realize they need training.

Good training gives you a thought process that will transfer to other things.

In 2017 Bob’s entire work team went to Vision as a group.

The owner should invest in you and you should invest in you.

You’ll get more out of it.

There are 15,040 techs employed in Chicago land.

Automotive seminars have 6 training centers in Chicago that get 40-50 guys per session.

The CAN conference (Chicago Area) has about 200 people show up.

Question: Why wasn’t there three hotels full of industry technicians to attend free training at Automechanika.

Landry: Show me why I should go to training?

Leon Anderson episode demonstrates a great learning culture. Listen HERE.

Find a way and a means to get to training.

Share a room.

Stretch yourself. Take courses you may not normally take.

Many techs without their owners support, find a way to get to training.

Calibration of new ADAS systems.

Challenges exist

Cost of equipment is high

Windshield replacement critical to have the OE glass

OE’s are making the rules on calibration.

Idea: License training and trainers.

After 4 days of training, dinners, bar time, networking and comradery; Matt, Bob and Peter brought their A game to the interview. I thank them for a classic episode!
