“Mission: To provide a work-based learning model that any industry can utilize to bridge the skills gap. Combining classroom instruction with on the job work based learning opportunities. This program integrates the classroom with employers to create an introduction to a career path of the student’s choice.”

“What Our Program Provides: The program simplifies the relationship between an industry lead business and vocational education that can lead into a career path. We ask for no money. Our “ask” is for your time. Time to integrate a student into your business to create a career fit. It starts with 10 hours and can grow into a new employee. Can you “Give Me Ten?””

Started 5 years ago-serviced 75 students, in 17 different shops, collected 450K in grand money that goes directly to students. Perkins Grants and Perkins are national grants.

Get your energy by talking with students about our industry

Is an undergrad degree considered worthless in today’s world?

How has this paid off? Andres Hobbs is on track to be a master technician before 25 years old. Matt Harbert started as an apprentice program at Bill’s from a school, started as work-study then was hired to join their apprentice program. Corporation knocked on Matt’s door to hire him, and he left and came back 9 months later. He didn’t enjoy the culture at the corporate level.

Identify the school around you- research the contacts (teachers/principles/school counselor), reach out with what you can offer (perspective in the classroom, mock interviews, host shadow day etc), and reach out to the chambers, consistency is the key

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work” Thomas Edison

Shops will have to start raising their own entry-level tech…. Shadowing and Mentoring will have to become part of the training program

You must have a relationship with your local schools

“You can’t build on sand, you need a foundation” be safe and have integrity with the vehicle. Cleaning bathroom, cleaning the floors etc

How do you get people to fall in love with cars and the process of automotive repair? Less passion for ‘cars’ but they want to learn and be without debt. It’s about relationships and people.

From fuel injection to ABS. VVT, turbo, and stability control to ADAS technology has always advanced. Can we learn from recent past experiences to prepare (when to purchase equipment, train our people, market to the public)

Keep up to date- what you “know” or have heard in the past may not be true today. All vehicles have a static calibration process performed when they are manufactured, which will not change. Dynamic creates a liability concern since vehicles need to be driven when the ADAS systems are not calibrated. Dynamic calibration can be difficult with weather, and road conditions.

You can help out besides donating money- growing only happens when you have a solid program, you need members to join

You can’t build a house online, you can’t fix a car online only- you need hands-on face to face training

COVID 19- learning how to adapt and train virtually, hybrid training has improved in-person training and revamping how to connect with students. Supporting students besides the training. Also opened dialogue between teachers at different school levels.

Trends- video pre-recording lectures to rewatch, reduce the amount of time of lecture to increase lab time

Finding more instructors- difficulties with part-time hours available, you need to find the people that want to give back. Can be difficult when someone hasn’t taught before. Battling the phrase “those that can’t do, teach.”

Variance rules for Credentials- hired on a limited basis, being passionate to teach, and hired with terms

You can still make a difference being a mentor in your business

Integrated high school with first-year college students- promotion within students talking about their experiences with friends in school

How can you help- get involved in schools (you don’t need to be an owner to go to schools, you can be a service advisor/tech etc), join advisory meetings

This national program puts students at the center of their own learning through “leave to learn” internships and shadowing at local businesses. If you’re not involved with education, this is your wake-up call to get started. All it takes is a phone call. My goal is that this episode shows you the way to engage our young people in our industry.

"Give Me 10" Internship Program [RR 689]

Did you know donating 10 hours a week of your time can make a difference in a student’s life? In this episode, Sue Dickson explains a simple internship program coined “Give me 10.” 10 hours a week divided into 5 days. We all can spare that time, especially when it can blossom into a new technician in our industry. It sets an example for your community, their parents, and your business culture. Don’t assume that someone else will do it. You must act. Call or stop by your local high school. Sue explains the how and why.

She went to the independent group and asked to donate a car to the tech campus. Tech 1 kids do steering and suspension. Tech 2 kids rebuild the motor. Collision painted it. Will be showcased at the advisory meeting. The car will travel to locations that have an internship program. Raffle tickets to win the car. Donate money to a non-profit

From Shadowing to Apprentice Graduate [RR 688]

We hear over and over again that high school students happen to stumble upon a shadowing field trip in school and realize the automotive industry has endless career opportunities for them. This happened with Bridgette Johnson, when are we going to start spreading the word to our local schools instead of sitting on the sidelines?

Giving Back: His Calling to Expose the Automotive to High School Students [RR 563]

My guest today demonstrates paying it forward. Luke Walker from Columbus, OH shares his 10-year success path from a one-bay shop into a 16 bay, $4M business.

He credits great people, coaching and a strong culture. A fascinating part of Luke’s story is his giving back to the community. As you listen, think about how you can help impress the automotive industry on the young people in your community. He is leading and supporting an after school program that unwraps automotive systems to students that may show technical/mechanical gifting and encourage them to our industry.

Talk to me at carm@remarkableresults.biz Thanks!!!! for sharing your thoughts. Find the key talking points, Patrick’s bio and links to his previous episodes at remarkableresults.biz/e565

The rent was $350 a month for a 1 bay shop and he had zero employees. The first-year Luke’s Auto did $260,000 in sales. At the end of 2014, Luke’s Auto was up to $750,000 in annual revenue with 10 employees.

Luke realized that he needed business training and since 2014, he has spent around $150,000 in business consultants and training. This business consulting and training brought his ability as a business owner to a new level and helped to secure Luke’s Auto as one of the top shops in Columbus.

10 years into the business there are now 16 bays, 24 employees, and $4MM in projected revenue for 2020. Luke’s Auto is the top Yelp and Google rated independent shop in all of Columbus and was voted as one of the “Three Best Car Repair Shops” in Columbus.
THA 118 Recruiting Students to Discover a Career in Automotive

Enjoy some great new ideas and real-world issues as I welcome Seth Thorson, shop owner, Eurotech, Brighton, MN. Seth created a $25,000 endowment for automotive careers. We discussed in episode 340, David Macholz, Academic Chair of Suffolk County College - Automotive Technology and Aaron Dalton, Coordinator- School to Career Programming at the North Kansas City Schools.

On the podcast, we’ve not shied away from big issues in the industry. The only way our investment in this great dialogue actually gets traction is if you do your part. I can relate the discussion we are having today with a thought on philanthropy. Hats off to what you do for your community. Honorable. However, the future of our industry is dependent on recruiting, training and retaining technicians. Call it an investment in your own personal philanthropy.

Getting involved in local education at all levels to share our hi-tech industry with administration and to support the educators that are teaching young students on the automotive is a very important role you have. Especially as an independent. If you don’t then who? You will have less to give to your community if you don’t invest in your future.

AAPEX EDU 2018 The Road To Great Technicians

A fundamentally valuable discussion as we get ready to deal with the tsunami of seeding our industry with our future technicians that will have the competencies necessary to perform mechanical and diag work and the need to develop career paths for every level of technician.

We need apprentice and mentoring programs that are universal to the industry, along with an industry moving in the same training direction so we can create competent technicians to work on the tech and safety issues of our future vehicles. We do not need our government involved in directing competencies, we need to do it ourselves.

This discussion is one you’ll need to hear time and time again. You will need to be involved and help move this initiative forward. Don’t wait to get involved. A first step is to become a member of NASTF. It is Free. Go to NAFTF.org

Key Talking Points:

“There is nothing like a crisis to pull everyone together.” Donny Seyfer

The entire industry needs to participate in growing and keeping technicians. Dealers are having the same challenge.

Churn is not good or acceptable to grow our industry.

Losing a key technician can cause a big gap in revenue. Finding someone if you are behind the eightball is an expensive problem. Growing talent beforehand and on-going will

Toyota needs 1400 technicians per year to keep their dealer network supplied. Aftermarket heeds this.

Military veterans are a consideration for Toyota.

It starts at the dinner table. We need to get the word out to everyone who wants to listen.

When kids are involved in a STEM class and or a youth automotive program they will cross-pollinate their friends. We need to get them involved so we can gain that advantage. Just one tactic to build it from the entry level.

There is a video game to work on cars now.

We need to remodel how we educate our students (all trades) from an outcome-based education to a more competency-based or master of a skills-based education system.

Give the student to move when they are ready not as a project group.

Career pathing is to have all students to have the same competencies. All they would have to learn about their new employer is their culture.

Industry and education need to be attached at the hip.

Mentoring will be a big part of this plan.

We’ll never find mentors if they don’t know how and are paid appropriately.

Find a mentoring program at SP/2. Go to SP2.org, send an email and ask for the mentoring system. It is in beta.

We need the structure from a mentoring program, but outlining a career path is as important to the next generation of technicians.

Career-pathing is an industry problem.

Entry level technicians need to know how to move up to B tech and A tech and what other directions, such as parts, service.

Competencies must be identified across the entire industry.

In the early ’70s, ASE helped keep the government at bay and to engage industry and to create a standard to gauge the knowledge-based of the technician.

We need to get an electrical diagnosis as simple as righty tighty lefty loosey.

The industry needs to take its rightful place to support ASE and education.

The educators need the tools to teach the competency-based skills.

NASTF’s goal is to connect everyone.

There are multiple initiatives going on across the country.

Mentoring, Apprentice programs everywhere.

Service Quality Specialist is a new program being developed by Toyota

Creating a new role. Their highest level is Toyota Master Technician (TMT)

Make their TMT a salary position so they can mentor and coach technicians. This position will monitor the quality of work they do.

Our technicians are being poached by other industries that need technicians.

The entry-level technician developed by NASTF

Top shop operators looked at the outline and asked to adopt that person. In other words, they felt the outline was a home run.

The FAA model of competency may be a perfect choice moving forward. How does it get done is the challenge. The technician gets a new certification from, for example, ASE.

Jill Saunders is in charge of the Skills USA competition. We can learn from Skills USA which is a hands-on competency based test for secondary and post-secondary students.

As an industry, we can support it at a local industry

Students also are learning soft skills, like interviewing and writing a resume.

Not all who come in our industry do not have support from home.

We need to be there to lift the instructors, students and provide ‘in-kind’ donations and support to these institutions who are molding our future technicians.

The onslaught of technology is putting us at risk because all of that technology is focused on safety. Who’s watching? NHTSA. (Safety and Cybersecurity) We need to get our act together before the government gets involved.

The collision industry has been told that they will need to have a quality technician working in their shops because of the high tech nature of collision repairs. Consider that the collision industry will be looking to find the best technicians in the industry.

There is an opportunity for mechanical shops to partner with collision shops to support their diag needs and mechanical work.

ADAS technology has the training industry and equipment industry up in arms over what it takes for calibration of ADAS systems.

The supplier of the technology in concert with the OE creates the calibration specifications.

You must read and have the willingness to follow the directions and the discipline to read all of the OE specs.

Technical reading skills will become an important part of training.

You must follow OE directions to the letter.

We need to support education to a higher degree than we’ve been doing. Industry and education must align.

Anthony Williams has a dream of building PTECH (pathways to technology) School in Colorado Springs. A six-year public high school in partnership with public schools and the automotive industry. Need to build a consortium to build the school.

Will include project-based learning models (STEM/STEAM)

No traditional classrooms.

Will have English, Math and History weaved into projects.

Automotive Technology, Business, and Engineering will be the areas of focus selected in their sophomore year.

The three R’s: Rigor, Relevance to the automotive industry, Relational (working together in partnership)
