How many schools have you visited recently? What is your relationship like with the teachers, and school counselors? Have you hosted a shadow day at your shop for students? If your answer is no to any of these questions, answer this one: what is stopping you? Get your energy by talking with students about our industry
Is an undergrad degree considered worthless in today’s world?
How has this paid off? Andres Hobbs is on track to be a master technician before 25 years old. Matt Harbert started as an apprentice program at Bill’s from a school, started as work-study then was hired to join their apprentice program. Corporation knocked on Matt’s door to hire him, and he left and came back 9 months later. He didn’t enjoy the culture at the corporate level.
Identify the school around you- research the contacts (teachers/principles/school counselor), reach out with what you can offer (perspective in the classroom, mock interviews, host shadow day etc), and reach out to the chambers, consistency is the key

From fuel injection to ABS. VVT, turbo, and stability control to ADAS technology has always advanced. Can we learn from recent past experiences to prepare (when to purchase equipment, train our people, market to the public)
Keep up to date- what you “know” or have heard in the past may not be true today. All vehicles have a static calibration process performed when they are manufactured, which will not change. Dynamic creates a liability concern since vehicles need to be driven when the ADAS systems are not calibrated. Dynamic calibration can be difficult with weather, and road conditions.

You can help out besides donating money- growing only happens when you have a solid program, you need members to join
You can’t build a house online, you can’t fix a car online only- you need hands-on face to face training
COVID 19- learning how to adapt and train virtually, hybrid training has improved in-person training and revamping how to connect with students. Supporting students besides the training. Also opened dialogue between teachers at different school levels.
Trends- video pre-recording lectures to rewatch, reduce the amount of time of lecture to increase lab time
Finding more instructors- difficulties with part-time hours available, you need to find the people that want to give back. Can be difficult when someone hasn’t taught before. Battling the phrase “those that can’t do, teach.”
Variance rules for Credentials- hired on a limited basis, being passionate to teach, and hired with terms
You can still make a difference being a mentor in your business
Integrated high school with first-year college students- promotion within students talking about their experiences with friends in school

The Big Picture Program [RR 715]

I recently had the privilege to connect with Karen Monaco, a teacher for a local school district and advisor for the Big Picture Program during a local independent shop owner meeting. This national program puts students at the center of their own learning through “leave to learn” internships and shadowing at local businesses. If you’re not involved with education, this is your wake-up call to get started. All it takes is a phone call. My goal is that this episode shows you the way to engage our young people in our industry.

The Big Picture Program started 20 years ago, it is a national program bigpicture.org
90 students grade level 8th-12th. 15 kids per advisor- teaching real word learning through internships
More than half of students don’t know what they want to do next
Interest inventory- visiting different places/jobs/parks, “leaving to learn”
Most high schools will have some type of internship program/connection to the trades. Email the guidance office, go into school and speak to the students (zoom call too). Explain what a day-to-day looks like at your business.
Shadowing- 1 student for 1 day
Internship for Karen’s school district- Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 am-1 pm, 6-8 week commitment
Soft skills – address an envelope, write a check, dress code, sign name, tell time on an analog clock, resume building
Insurance policy for students to eliminate risk when they go to businesses

“Give Me 10” Internship Program – Sue Dickson [RR 689]

Sue Dickson, Owner of Closs Tire & Auto Inc, Waukegan, IL. Sue is trying to change the face of the industry to empower woman to be a part of the automotive industry. Sue has 37 years of experience in retail automotive market and has partnered with her community to grow her business. She is directly responsible for overall profitability, sales and service for this independent auto repair facility. She continues to work with the Lake County Tech Campus, College of Lake County, to bridge the gap between school based work and hands-on work experience. Sue has written and implemented a Lake County Tech Campus internship which has been in place since 2019 and served over 50 students. She also has partnered with Lake County Workforce Development to take her internship program to the next level. This relationship has given students the opportunity to gain work base employment and grant opportunities for education at the local community college.

Key Talking Points

“Give Me 10” Internship Program- 10 hours broken up 2 hours for 5 days. Job shadowing 2 hours the first day, after that they will be working for the remaining 8 hours. Oil changes, brake work, tires, etc.
Insurance is covered by the school because it is work-based learning
Break the stereotype that young adults can only be successful if they have a 4-year degree
What is the biggest competition with independent repair shops? Dealerships. Local shops started coming together for networking meetings, they also visit each other’s shops to critique
Sue volunteers at the local car show and she registers classic cars. They wanted the tech campus to be involved and see the older cars. She went to the independent group and asked to donate a car to the tech campus. Tech 1 kids do steering and suspension. Tech 2 kids rebuild the motor. Collision painted it. Will be showcased at the advisory meeting. The car will travel to locations that have an internship program. Raffle tickets to win the car. Donate money to a non-profit
Grant opportunities through the workforce development- over 4 years the networking group has received almost 200K

From Shadowing to Apprentice Graduate – Bridgette Johnson [RR 688]

Bridgette Johnson, L&N Performance Automotive Repair, Blowing Rock, NC. Bridgette graduated from the automotive program at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute. Through the North Carolina Apprenticeship Program, she was able to finish college debt-free and begin her career right after high school. She not only received her Associate’s degree but also her Journeywoman card and certificates of completion for the NC State Apprenticeship Program.

November 2019 Episode 482– IGONC Apprentice Program. 2 year college program, full ride with no debt.
ADAS- learning about the new technology, cameras, sensors.
