Walt Disney- three stages of thinking: dreamer, realist, and critic

Learning and working- learn one thing every day, affects your whole body, attitude, and motivation

The US ranked 26th/27th in the world for the number of ideas we get from our employees- do employees know owners want their ideas?

Round robin brainstorming exercise- topic to discuss and each person has a chance to give ideas. Best ideas happened at the end once people can hear what others say and build on it

Check your ego and job title at the door when brainstorming as a group- no idea is a bad idea and there can’t be criticism

SWOT- strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats: don’t wait to do SWOT when there is a serious issue. When you’re desperate you will come up with desperate ideas

Brainstorming with a team builds loyalty and makes people want to contribute

Don’t limit your base of knowledge to just the people you know- get outside input

Life After Succession - Randy Pickering [RR 576]

Family businesses can survive the generations, needless to say, you’ve got to do a lot of things right. It’s the culture, discipline, and the brand that gives the necessary template for a successful transition.

Today we welcome Randy Pickering, legacy owner of Pickering’s in Lakewood, CO. Pickerings is an amazing company that is transitioning into the 5th generation, Randy’s two sons. That is a rare thing.

To help gain their independence Randy says his sons both wanted to join a 20 group of their own and opened their 2nd store to scale up for a solid exit plan. Randy shares his newfound life after leading Pickerings in Lakewood, CO.

As a 4th generation automotive “lifer”, I have learned that vehicles come and go, are broken, and fixed, but the relationships with our customers far outlast their transportation needs.

I am committed to ensuring that every customer of ours is completely satisfied after working with our team. We work diligently to provide peace of mind to all of our customers by treating them as if they were part of our own families.

I wanted Pickering’s to be an environment that reminded our customers of a time when your technician and service advisor were more than just the people who took care of your car, but rather individuals who remembered you by name, genuinely took an interest in your life and built a relationship with you.

We believe our industry should not differ from any other industry in how we perform customer service. Just because we are in the auto repair business does not mean customers should expect poor customer service and abuse, as many customers believe they receive from others in our industry.

We will greet our customers cheerfully, excited that WE CAN resolve the auto repair problems they have. Knowing that with our resources WE CAN help them get the fullest life use of their vehicle.

We want to earn our customers trust so they are comfortable and confident with our integrity and abilities to have us take care of their car concerns.

We want our customers to be satisfied, as never before, in our industry. We hope our customers will become our raving fans and feel the need to express their experiences to others, recommending our facility to them.

Decade the Seventies: Talking Auto Repair - THA 184

What was auto repair like in the decade of the seventies? In order to make this panel work, I needed to find aftermarket leaders that are still active in the industry and who were in the trenches in the seventies. I found them. And what you are going to hear is an incredible journey from their collective memories.

Listen to this cast: Mitch Schneider, Chris Chesney, Maylan Newton, Jerry Kezhaya, and Bob Pulverenti. Needless to say, this group had so much fun sharing their escapades as technicians or shop owners. Even if you weren’t a member of the class of the seventies you’ll appreciate the stories of how things were and without them, we wouldn’t have what we have today.

Unscripted - Mitch Schneider - The Broken Arm Episode [RR 558]

My fourth episode with industry icon Mitch Schneider. I’m calling it the “Broken Arm Episode.” Hear all about it in this episode. Mitch brought his unmistakable wit and charm to this interview as we turned on the recorder and just let it flow. No intended agenda so this is pure and raw podcasting at it’s best.

The video was also recorded. You can see it on my Youtube Channel or on the website on the show notes page at remarkableresults.biz/e558. You get a chance to see a behind the scenes of a podcast recording session.

Every time I can have a chat with Mitch Scheider I feel honored and as you’ll hear, like two old shoes, worn-in, comfortable, and coveted. You never want to get rid of ‘em.

If you’ve read Mitch for decades in our aftermarket press, In fact, he is still writing, this is like a live article on many topics, We talk about his book Misfire, wisdom on learning, the power of reading and his perspective on the tech shortage and much more.

Mitch Schneider - His First Speech 35 Years ago, Still relevant today!

Mitch Schneider is here for his second time. Mitch is an award-winning journalist, former shop owner and soon to be published novelist. For more than 37 years, Mitch operated Schneider’s Automotive — a successful 6-bay, family-owned and operated service facility in Simi Valley, Calif. Mitch has recent great news on the biggest challenge in his life as he has taken on Primary Myelofibrosis head-on. He is in his recovery mode from a bone marrow transplant. Mitch is a survivor of this rare procedure and I’m so glad to have him back to have another conversation with him.

When Mitch wrote his speech 35 years ago, he was angry. He showed his frustration and he is now reflective at the state of the industry today. It is sad to say that not much has changed. Listen and learn the issues then and now and some discussion on what we need to do remedy. Are you onboard?

Key Talking Points:

Mitch gave a speech “Give Me Your Tired and Broken Cars” as a State of the Industry address for ETI’s Fall Meeting in 1984. Thirty-five years later Mitch sees a very similar landscape in the aftermarket.

He understood the industry so well at that time. That speech started his career as an industry influencer, writer, speaker. He gave this speech 12 times that year.

Mitch asks the question: “If we wanted it fixed would we have fixed it years ago?”

Need to create own voice for the aftermarket, an organization that can speak for us

He actually started a federation of qualified technicians. It grew but became too expensive to support; nothing like we have today with social media.

He believes strongly in licensing and certifications for technicians

He strongly supports ASE

We need to get together and talk about what we can and cannot do

We do not have any best practices that are published

There is more to the profession than calling yourself a professional

We need to accept that there are different levels of performance within the industry

Data acquisition, mechanical, diagnostics

He believes many within the industry are being paid what we are worth

Independents need to learn how to attract the right talent

Right to Repair initiative polarized the industry

We can be interdependent instead of independent

There are better shops today because Mitch had influence in his writing and speaking

We need to become better communicators

Are we taking care of ourselves?

Face masks

Gloves

Safety shoes

Minimize work with petrochemicals and solvents

Our industry is intensive in these areas:

Equipment

Labor

Physically

Liability

Environmental responsibility

We need to create a General Accepted Automotive Principles just like the account have with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)

The supplier groups are strong and the manufacturers are weaker

Here are his points from that speech from 1984

Stereotype

Stigma

Technician Shortage: Industry Graying/Shrinking from either retirement or seasoned technicians abandoning the industry to pursue other interests

Scarcity of ‘good’ mechanics/technicians

Dangers from chemical exposure to carcinogenic chemicals – Who knew?

High Stress

Inadequate compensation: the person who builds the vehicle makes exponentially more than the person who keeps it running…

An unrealistic belief that someone will always be there to service, maintain or repair the vehicle

A reality that there are different and distinct skillsets for mechanics and technicians

The explosion of technology that occurred between 1978 and 1984… And, what has transpired since

An ongoing problem of who finds their way into the industry and where they finally land: what percentage come from trade schools and vocational education and how many just ‘migrate’ in.

How many come from other cultures and immigrant populations as our profession can be the door to a better life and what impact has that had and will continue to have.

If you can service, maintain or repair a late model car or truck you can quickly learn to become an HVAC technician, a plumber or electrician

Cost of tools and equipment

Disorganized and unrepresented… Taking the word ‘independent’ far too seriously

Face to face communication

Humans are social- can’t be shown through technology

Sometimes technology is used as a defence mechanism not to communicate

Trust and credibility is the basis of all relationship- need to trust the person fixing your vehicle

Conversations and messages can get misconstrued over technology and marketing

Using Facetime or video conferencing can be used to convey messages, trouble shooting and training

Ask customer how they like to communicate

Millennials want feedback on performance and face to face- also want to communicate with phone calls

People by from people

Partnerships

First part of a sale is building a relationship not selling something

Having a relationship allows you to have open discussions about any problems with vehicle with customer

Using technology to engage with customer

Showing the customer what is wrong with vehicle- face to face but using technology

Always selling

Build culture with mindset of selling

Value of marketing
