Is the Automotive Industry Ready for a Language Revolution? [RR 980]

Michael Smith discusses the need for a language and mindset shift to elevate the perception of automotive professionals. The conversation highlights the transition from viewing independent shops as “mom and pop” operations to recognizing them as sophisticated businesses led by “solopreneurs” or “mechanical and technology specialists.” Michael also introduces the concept of psycholinguistics, explaining how the words we use shape our beliefs and self-perception. For instance, identifying oneself as a “mechanic” can reinforce a limited self-image, trapping individuals in a cycle that hinders growth and innovation. To break free from this cycle, there must be a conscious effort to change the language used within the industry.

All Fired Up!

Have you ever come back from a conference all fired up?
I’m sure you have. If not it is about time.

If you haven’t, you have no idea what it does for the heart and soul.

Here are some words to describe a positive conference experience:

  • Invigorating!
  • I didn’t know that.
  • I can not fix this problem.
  • Can’t wait to share with my people.
  • I’ve always wanted to learn more about that!
  • I thought I knew a lot about (   ) fill in the blank.
  • Wow, technology is moving faster than I thought.
  • Met some very nice people that share my passion.
  • Why didn’t I come to this conference before?
  • I should have brought my key Mechanical or Technology Specialist.
  • I got more than I expected!
  • Saw the latest tools and equipment.
  • Spoke to some very smart people. Imagine I’m in their league!

I say this to remind you of the late summer/fall conference opportunities you have in front of you. As of this writing we’ll be at AARO, ASTA, RSOT Mastermind, AAPEX. There is also FLACA, Transformers, ASCCA and Super Saturday just to name a few. For some of these conferences they are a half day drive. For some you’ll need to get on a plane. But ultimately it is what you make it. The courses you take, the people your intentionally meet, the knowledge you gain, among others. Invest in you and your team.

All shows on the Aftermarket Radio Network is like a weekly conference of the best aftermarket content on the planet. But yet there is nothing like being in the thick of great conferences that can inspire and change you.

Tracy and I hope to see you this late summer/fall and do hope you’ll stop to say hi.

 Making Music

I’m fascinated to watch documentaries on, ‘The Making of an Album’. I’ve seen some on Pink Floyd and Queen, just to name two. Sometimes, we see the artist or entire band sitting at the mixing council, talking about how the song came to be.

It is rare not to talk about the collaboration of the producer, writer(s), performers, and engineers. To see how records come together with the genius of the collaborators working for the goodness of the record.

I started to think about how running a business is like making a record. Just like in the music industry, where a singer, producer, writer, and engineer all work together to create a masterpiece, the same principles apply to running a successful business.

The singer represents the visionary leader of the business. They set the tone and direction for the company, just like a singer sets a song’s melody and vocal style. In many cases, they’ve written the words and music. Their passion and charisma inspire others to follow their lead.

The producer, in this analogy is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the record (think business). They are in the integrator role and bring a load of creativity to the record (think George Martin of Beatles fame). The producer ensures that all elements of a song come together harmoniously. They coordinate with different departments and make sure that everyone is working towards achieving common goals and that the vision of the band and writers is brought to the market.

The writer in this scenario is responsible for crafting compelling messages and narratives that resonate with customers. They create engaging content, such as marketing materials or blog posts, that effectively communicate the brand’s story and values. Just like lyrics bring meaning to a song, well-crafted copy brings meaning to a brand.

Lastly, we have the engineer who ensures that everything technical works seamlessly. In business terms, this could be an IT expert or web developer who maintains systems and keeps technology running smoothly behind the scenes. In many of our small shops, this hat is worn by multiple people, most likely the owner. Similar to an audio engineer who fine-tunes sound levels and balances instruments in a recording studio.

Incredible things can happen when these roles work together cohesively in both music-making and business operations. Collaboration between individuals with different skill sets leads to innovation, creativity, and, ultimately, success.

Running a business shares many similarities with making records – it requires collaboration between individuals with different roles but shared goals. By recognizing these parallels between music-making and entrepreneurship, we can gain valuable insights into how businesses can thrive by leveraging teamwork and harnessing each individual’s unique strengths.

Take this story to your people in your next meeting, you may be surprised by the flow of ideas that will happen. Remind them, that as a team, they are ‘making music.’

Level Up Your Automotive Training with Gamification [RR 973]

“Research has shown that people forget 90% of what they “learn” in 30 days unless it’s reinforced. But reinforcement isn’t enough. Today’s Class training uses forced recall, a method that creates pathways in a learner’s brain, helping them retain information more effectively.”

David Boyes, from Today’s Class, discusses how daily gamification on Today’s Class’ app can enhance engagement and learning through individual and team-based competitions, rewards points, and prizes. “It’s microdosing of training. It’s a set of daily questions on a daily basis.”

Are you Done Trying?

You put in the hard work, the late nights, and the inevitable 2 AM wake-up. You are trying your hardest to serve clients, maintain a great team, and make money, yet this isn’t the dream you had when you started.

Is it time to stop going through the motions and start making real progress? Is it time to stop settling and start living the life you truly want? Far too often, we convince ourselves that we’ve reached our limits, tried our hardest, and that achieving our dreams is impossible. But is that really the case?

We let fear, self-doubt, and the opinions of others hold us back from reaching our full potential. We tell ourselves that it’s not worth the effort, that the risk is too high, that we’ll never succeed.

But what if I told you that your mindset is the only thing standing in your way? That with the right attitude and determination, you can overcome any obstacle? It’s time to silence that negative self-talk and start believing in yourself. It is the person in the mirror.

The path to success is rarely a straight line. There will be setbacks, failures, and moments of frustration. But those are the moments that truly define us. How we respond to adversity determines whether we’ll achieve our goals. The rewards of perseverance are far greater than the comfort of giving up.

It’s time to stop going through the motions and start making real progress: no more excuses or half-measures. Far too often, we let ourselves off the hook, telling ourselves we’ve “tried our best” when the truth is, we haven’t pushed ourselves nearly as hard as we’re capable of.

Your moment is now. No more waiting, no more wondering. It’s time to stop trying and start doing. The future you want is within reach, but only if you’re willing to reach out and grab it. So what are you waiting for? The clock is ticking – the question is, are you ready to make your move? I hope so.

I can help. Email me, and I’ll send you some episodes to listen to to recharge your battery and take critical next steps to fulfill your destiny and self-worth.
