I have written and outlined what I believe is an essential intellectual transformation for the professional automotive service industry. This Declaration—The Rise of the Specialist—is more than a document. It is a vision, a movement, and an intention to elevate how we see ourselves, how we speak, and how we lead.
Your role is vital. By embracing and sharing this Declaration within your organization and throughout your network, you help solidify a new standard of professionalism and purpose. This is how movements grow—through belief, adoption, and advocacy.
Implementing this shift is not difficult if you believe in its purpose. The first step is gaining buy-in from your team. The language may take time to fully integrate, but do not regress. Do not allow old terminology and old thinking to define your future. This transformation strengthens not only how your customers perceive you—but how your team perceives themselves. Professional language reinforces professional identity, pride, and culture. Shop owners across the industry are already adopting this Declaration, using it to build stronger cultures and more intentional organizations.
I have presented The Rise of the Specialist in keynote addresses and leadership forums across the industry, including the MACS Training Event & Trade Show, the ASE Board of Governors, Ford Service Engineering, the Automotive Aftermarket Leadership program at Northwood University, the Automotive Communication Council, NAPA Business Development Groups, and many others. The response has been overwhelmingly positive—confirming that our industry is ready for this next step forward.
