Be Careful of the Limitations You Fight For

Be Careful of the Limitations You Fight For
— Inspired by Jim Kwik

Jim Kwik says, “If you fight for your limitations, you get to keep them.” We probably all know that we like to stay within our comfort zones whenever possible. But the truth is, we often do more than that—we fight, sometimes to the death, to protect those comfort zones.

Think about that for a moment. Imagine being willing to fight to the death for something you believe in or are passionate about (a noble cause), yet at the same time, you’re struggling to grow as a leader or improve the profit and culture of your business. It’s a contradiction we rarely notice in ourselves because our limiting beliefs often sound like logic, reason, or “just the way things are.”

We tell ourselves stories about why we can’t hire better people, why customers will never pay a higher price, or why we don’t have the time to train the next generation of leaders. We defend these limitations with everything we have, but in doing so, we also defend the very walls that keep us from breaking through to the next level.

At some point, you have to stop listening to your rhetoric and ask yourself a hard question:

“Is this belief truly serving me, or am I simply fighting to stay comfortable?”

Look around your business, your team, your leadership style. Are there places where your short-sightedness or limiting beliefs cost you the growth, profit, and freedom you desire?

The limitations you fight for are the limitations you will keep. If you want to grow, you must be willing to question what you’ve been defending and let go of the comfort that’s keeping you small.

That’s when your next level of leadership begins. Are you ready to hire a coach?
